The real question is "for who and what should MacPorts be really good, and is it ?" I use MacPorts to install Gimp and would never use Gimp.app. I download Smultron and would never build it from source. And I'm not (too) schizoid. The other question is "what can be learned from that opensource mac site ?" I would answer that some editoral is always most welcome. How about a "feature app of the week" on the home page ? The best thing to do is to open a ticket on Trac [1] following the guidelines on TracTicketing [2] to request an update from the maintainer; you will need to register for an account on the MacPorts site for this if you don't already have one. Failing that, you can email the maintainer directly. If you haven't already found it, "port info ocaml" will list the email address of the maintainer (you can probably find it in other ways too). I installed mysql5 fine and then deactivated mysql4 with no problem. When I try to then install a new version of php5 using port install php5 +apache2 +mysql5 +pear I end up getting errors after waiting a very long time for things to compile. The typical error is: Error: Activating pcre 7.1_1 failed: Image error: Another version of this port (pcre @4.5_0) is already active. or Error: Deactivating expat 1.95.7_0 failed: Image error: expat @1.95.7_0 not installed as an image. but in place of expat when i tried to install the php5 directly it gave an error about pcre. I then tried to upgrade all my updated ports using port upgrade outdated and some were successful while others got similar errors as described above? What is causing this problem and how do I go about fixing it because of of right now my LAMP install is busted and I can't get anything accomplished until i resolve the php5 issue. However, various flavors of fortran are included in various flavors of GCC. You can use MacPorts to install GCC 4.1 (I think GCC 4.2 is still developmental). Someplace useful to you at some point is http://gcc.gnu.org/wiki/GFortranGettingStarted. I know that I've compiled other peoples code that contains fortran (R language for statistical computing) under MacPorts. With that said, MacPorts doesn't seem to find the direct command to start the compiler (gfortran). I suspect you will need a 'portfile' to get this working. For my part, I haven't written fortran since ... 1977. I did a selfupdate yesterday and again this morning before trying to uninstall and install php5 but still had the same problems. Like I said earlier I have been able to install other ports so it isn't like my whole macports installation is busted. Just php5 is giving me an issue right now. Just be prepared to have something to do while it builds, it takes its time. gcc42 lives in MacPorts box, so it shouldn't affect Xcode. ! ! I have never had a reason to edit the port command but I guess it is possible something happened to it. I guess you may be right and I might need to start from scratch. It is just frustrating since this isn't the first time I would have had to completely reinstall macports (well I had darwinports and that had issues so I did a fresh install of macports a few months back). It is possible it is user error and that I am doing something wrong but I don't really use it all that often and have only installed like 10 apps since I originally installed darwinports a year and a half ago. I'll take a look at your file and try to see if anything strikes me as blatantly obvious. If you `port -d selfupdate`, you should see some mention of libmd and libcrypto. For example, I see: checking for MD5Update in -lmd... no checking for MD5_Update in -lcrypto... yes So perhaps you have libmd on your system? (version 0.3 of libmd should provide the headers you're missing). If this is your problem, you could work around it by moving libmd aside temporarily while you selfupdate. That would force libcrypto to be used. Chris (pardon the switch of email address) -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... Well, configure checked for libmd and found it. As for how to prevent it, you first need to find where it is--probably /usr/local/lib; maybe /usr/lib--and rename it temporarily while you compile, i.e. go to the directory and sudo mv libmd.dylib no-libmd.dylib ...followed by the same command in reverse once you've updated. Short answer: "sudo port sync" and then "sudo port upgrade php5". X11 is no longer required by php5, as of today. You caught the update at a bad time; php5 only required X11 for a period of about 28 hours. Long answer: php5 has always been built with support for gd2, and the php distribution has always included a copy of gd2. When my comaintainer Jyrki updated php5 to 5.2.3 in r25792 on 2007-06-02 05:17:19 -0500, a dependency on the gd2 port was added, because php would not build correctly with its built-in gd2 for some reason. The gd2 port requires an X11 installation, and as the message said, your Apple X11 installation was incomplete as far as MacPorts was concerned. So it tried to install XFree86, but that conflicted with the parts of Apple X11 that you already had installed. To fix that, you could either install all of Apple X11 (you need both X11SDK.pkg from the Xcode installer disk image, which is installed by default when you install Xcode, and X11User.pkg from your Mac OS X DVD, which is not installed by default when you install Mac OS X) or remove all of Apple X11 and install XFree86. I recommend using Apple X11, if you need it. But you don't, not for php5, because as of r25841 of 2007-06-03 09:18:20 -0500 php5 no longer depends on the gd2 port -- a solution was found to let php5 use its built-in gd2 again -- so you can just "sudo port sync" and then "sudo port upgrade php5" as usual and MacPorts will no longer attempt to install any X11. Well, I don't have libmd and can't install it via MacPorts because parts conflict with openssl. But from what it's trying to install, it looks like it implements md5, sha, and rmd160 (and nothing else), which are the three checksums that MacPorts uses. Openssl has a lot more. I'm assuming the reason MacPorts prefers libmd to libcrypto is because libmd targets specifically what we want. But, MacPorts now targets only Apple, and Apple doesn't provide it. Any base hackers have a reason we should still try to build with it? It seems the current situation can cause problems for people. I also can't explain why your MacPorts wouldn't be recognizing the uninstall command. It sounds like "something" is messed up with your base MacPorts installation, though I don't know much about the base code and so couldn't speculate as to what. Fortunately, I think you can safely reinstall MacPorts base without affecting any of your installed ports. Download the 1.4.0 disk image (the correct one for your OS version) and run the installer package on it. http://svn.macports.org/repository/macports/downloads/MacPorts-1.4.0/ Then, "sudo port selfupdate" to update you to MacPorts 1.4.42 again. (I'd refer you to download 1.4.42 directly, except that we only make direct downloads of the major versions available.) I'm not confident that this will fix it... I'm also not 100% sure this won't mess up your installed ports. But I *think* it won't. I didn't think to check that the sources for DocBook XML V4.1.2 have an XML catalog file included. It has an _SGML_ catalog file, but using that is really not the best way to fix it. Hold tight while I create one (along the lines of that in the other docbook-xml-4.* ports) and stick it in as a patchfile; hopefully I can upload it in a few hours, but if not, I'll do it tomorrow morning. Then I figured it out. It seems as though the fact that it was retaining my previous install information when I originally installed darwinports was what was causing the issue. After installing the new version of macports and doing a selfupdate left me with the same problem. It was late at night by the time I did that so I just wiped my macports install and all its references and did a fresh install and then just ran a quick shell script to install everything I wanted over night. The next day when I checked everything I created the startup items for the services I wanted and rebooted and I have a fully functional macports install again. Still a little weird why the uninstall never worked but it is working now so that is all that matters.
