Events disappearing with Calendar Server/iCal
Hi: We implemented Leopard Server w/ iCal server several months ago across our organization (approx. 65 users). We have been running server 10.5.2 although I upgraded it this morning to 10.5.3. The majority of our clients are on 10.5.2 with a handful on 10.5.3. We have had one user¹s calendar that has been ³flaky² on and off for the past several months meaning they stop receiving invitations that others have sent them... and we have to clear out her inbox on the calendar server (thus losing those notifications) and then it starts working again. This has happened repeatedly for this particular person and we¹ve reported this bug to Apple. Yesterday she reported that in her other, scheduling calendar (we have people who schedule events in which they don¹t participate so we have a separate ³scheduling² calendar for these folks) she had invited one of our consultants to a meeting with a client over a month ago. She scheduled the meeting in the calendar while on the phone with the consultant so we¹re certain she did schedule the meeting. She also moved around some travel on that same day to accommodate the meeting. The invite never showed up in the consultant¹s calendar and the meeting with a client was missed (so this is now a major issue). Upon examination in her calendar, the meeting is not there at all and the travel is back to how it was originally... as if she never changed it. This morning another user reports an event where several people were invited several months ago and while the organizers calendar indicates an attendee never responded, the particular attendee never received the invitation. My conclusion is that we have widespread reliability issues with iCal Server. I¹m wondering if others are seeing similar issues or have any thoughts as to what may be the issue. Additional info... turns out the user who has had ongoing calendar issues had 73 notifications in her in iCal this morning when she connected to the calendar. These go back to May 1st and she had zero in there when she left last night. Obviously the 10.5.3 Server upgrade has fixed something although I¹m left wondering what it didn¹t fix. More additional info... when I check the error log for iCal server there are two issues I notice. First, the access log at /var/log/caldavd/ is 6.59GB in size and the error.log is 4.54GB. When I inspect the error log I see line after line of the following two errors with a number of other errors interspersed every once in a while. Does anyone have any idea why the iCal Server is throwing so many errors... is this normal?!!? 2008-06-04 09:06:34-0400 [-] [caldav-8009] [AMP,client] PROPFIND /calendars/__uids__/B4B86476-5C1C-4BB9-A1CF-3CFB1B906853/ HTTP/1.1 2008-06-04 09:06:34-0400 [-] [caldav-8010] [AMP,client] Unauthenticated users not enabled with the 'calendar' SACL 2008-06-04 09:06:34-0400 [-] [caldav-8010] [AMP,client] PROPFIND /principals/__uids__/F8C67C04-48E2-432A-9B9D-24D18BC202C1/ HTTP/1.1 2008-06-04 09:06:34-0400 [-] [caldav-8009] [AMP,client] PROPFIND /calendars/__uids__/F8C67C04-48E2-432A-9B9D-24D18BC202C1/ HTTP/1.1 2008-06-04 09:06:34-0400 [-] [caldav-8010] [AMP,client] PROPFIND /calendars/__uids__/B4B86476-5C1C-4BB9-A1CF-3CFB1B906853/calendar/ HTTP/1.1 2008-06-04 09:06:34-0400 [-] [caldav-8011] [AMP,client] Unauthenticated users not enabled with the 'calendar' SACL 2008-06-04 09:06:34-0400 [-] [caldav-8011] [AMP,client] PROPFIND /principals/__uids__/07EF8794-D0E1-44C1-9370-7544C1C5F608/ HTTP/1.1 2008-06-04 09:06:34-0400 [-] [caldav-8011] [AMP,client] PROPFIND /calendars/__uids__/07EF8794-D0E1-44C1-9370-7544C1C5F608/ HTTP/1.1 2008-06-04 09:06:35-0400 [-] [caldav-8012] [AMP,client] Unauthenticated users not enabled with the 'calendar' SACL 2008-06-04 09:06:35-0400 [-] [caldav-8012] [AMP,client] PROPFIND /principals/__uids__/BE076FA2-028C-48FD-BFBC-C29242B0D74F/ HTTP/1.1 2008-06-04 09:06:35-0400 [-] [caldav-8012] [AMP,client] PROPFIND /calendars/__uids__/BE076FA2-028C-48FD-BFBC-C29242B0D74F/ HTTP/1.1 2008-06-04 09:06:35-0400 [-] [caldav-8013] [AMP,client] Unauthenticated users not enabled with the 'calendar' SACL 2008-06-04 09:06:35-0400 [-] [caldav-8013] [AMP,client] PROPFIND /principals/__uids__/C83849C2-CA7B-4A59-A7D7-07036146B7AB/ HTTP/1.1 2008-06-04 09:06:35-0400 [-] [caldav-8011] [AMP,client] PROPFIND /calendars/__uids__/07EF8794-D0E1-44C1-9370-7544C1C5F608/calendar/ HTTP/1.1 2008-06-04 09:06:35-0400 [-] [caldav-8010] [AMP,client] PROPFIND /calendars/__uids__/C83849C2-CA7B-4A59-A7D7-07036146B7AB/ HTTP/1.1 2008-06-04 09:06:35-0400 [-] [caldav-8013] [AMP,client] REPORT /calendars/__uids__/B4B86476-5C1C-4BB9-A1CF-3CFB1B906853/calendar/ HTTP/1.1 2008-06-04 09:06:35-0400 [-] [caldav-8009] [AMP,client] PROPFIND /calendars/__uids__/F8C67C04-48E2-432A-9B9D-24D18BC202C1/calendar/ HTTP/1.1 2008-06-04 09:06:35-0400 [-] [caldav-8014] [AMP,client] Unauthenticated users not enabled with the 'calendar' SACL 2008-06-04 09:06:35-0400 [-] [caldav-8014] [AMP,client] PROPFIND /principals/__uids__/65FB8273-1D21-47AD-9BC3-0E80984F5E1F/ HTTP/1.1 2008-06-04 09:06:35-0400 [-] [caldav-8014] [AMP,client] PROPFIND /calendars/__uids__/65FB8273-1D21-47AD-9BC3-0E80984F5E1F/ HTTP/1.1 2008-06-04 09:06:35-0400 [-] [caldav-8015] [AMP,client] Unauthenticated users not enabled with the 'calendar' SACL 2008-06-04 09:06:35-0400 [-] [caldav-8015] [AMP,client] PROPFIND /principals/__uids__/62D79FC5-762C-4AAA-A0EE-9797D7043EFE/ HTTP/1.1 I¹ll be talking to Apple again later today but any help or insight would be much appreciated. We have had one user’s calendar that has been “flaky” on and off for the past several months meaning they stop receiving invitations that others have sent them... and we have to clear out her inbox on the calendar server (thus losing those notifications) and then it starts working again. This has happened repeatedly for this particular person and we’ve reported this bug to Apple.
Did you try removing then re-adding the server account in iCal? That is certainly the first thing to do if things start to get out of sync. Modifying data on the server should be a last resort. If after re-adding the account in iCal, it still has problems, if you can, tar up the user's calendar data and submit that in a bug report so we can try to reproduce the issue here.
Yesterday she reported that in her other, scheduling calendar (we have people who schedule events in which they don’t participate so we have a separate “scheduling” calendar for these folks) she had invited one of our consultants to a meeting with a client over a month ago. She scheduled the meeting in the calendar while on the phone with the consultant so we’re certain she did schedule the meeting. She also moved around some travel on that same day to accommodate the meeting. The invite never showed up in the consultant’s calendar and the meeting with a client was missed (so this is now a major issue). Upon examination in her calendar, the meeting is not there at all and the travel is back to how it was originally... as if she never changed it.
If an account reset shows the old data, then iCal never sent the changes to the server. Or if it did, the data was somehow reverted. Are you doing any kind of backup/restore of the data on the server itself?
This morning another user reports an event where several people were invited several months ago and while the organizers calendar indicates an attendee never responded, the particular attendee never received the invitation.
Is this a one off or have you seen lots of these?
More additional info... when I check the error log for iCal server there are two issues I notice. First, the access log at /var/log/caldavd/ is 6.59GB in size and the error.log is 4.54GB. When I inspect the error log I see line after line of the following two errors with a number of other errors interspersed every once in a while. Does anyone have any idea why the iCal Server is throwing so many errors... is this normal?!!?
2008-06-04 09:06:34-0400 [-] [caldav-8009] [AMP,client] PROPFIND /calendars/__uids__/B4B86476-5C1C-4BB9-A1CF-3CFB1B906853/ HTTP/1.1 2008-06-04 09:06:34-0400 [-] [caldav-8010] [AMP,client] Unauthenticated users not enabled with the 'calendar' SACL
The error log is actually a little more verbose that it needs to be right now and is logging things that are not strictly errors. What you showed is "normal" for the server. -- Cyrus Daboo
