Hi, not sure if this is really the right list for this ( discuss@ maybe ?, ) but I was looking at http://release.opendarwin.org/ and was wondering ... is there an automated way people are test building OD with darwinbuild ? is there a build order ? Hi, is there an easy way to get DarwinBuild to attempt to fetch roots from a separate location first before the default locations ? I would like DarwinBuild to check my webservers for pre-built roots before defaulting to OpenDarwin's. Also ... while I am here, are gzip'd n' tar'd files the only recognised file type for roots, or can I use bzip2'd n' tar'd files ... or maybe xar ? S a m

[darwinbuild] xar subdoc usage

I've made a first pass at trying to include some of the darwinbuild related metadata in the xar archives created by packageRoots. Basically, I've added a darwinxref module that just takes the project information that is in the plist from the database and exports it in either plist or xml style like exportIndex does. Then packageRoots calls this, exports the information in xml format, and has xar add it as a subdoc in the archive named 'darwinbuild'. Rob

[darwinbuild] Using darwinbuild for development

Hello all, a few days ago I decided to give the kernel a kick. As there are so many good comments about darwinbuild, I set up this to build the thing. Now, it seems a lot like the kernel is built from scratch each time I issue darwinbuild, regardless of how much code I change. Even two "darwinbuild xnu" in a row do two full rebuilds each time. In comparison, building xnu outside darwinbuild makes builds after a small code change almost a snap (5 min vs. 40 min). Is there something I could do about this? [darwinbuild] proposed modification to InstallHeader() behavior

I'd like to modify the InstallHeader() behavior so that installhdrs done locally will get loaded into the BuildRoot if they're newer than what's already in there. Presently InstallHeaders does not let you "downgrade" from a full root to a headers root. The new logic should read as follows: 1) Install a self-built headers root if newer than headers or full root in BuildRoot else 2) Install a self-built full root if newer than headers or full root in BuildRoot else 3) Install a pre-built headers root if nothing installed in BuildRoot else 4) Install a pre-built full root if no pre-built headers root was found Since I didn't want to break anyone else's installation, I've attached a patch for review. It seems to be working fine on my system. Thanks, - Kevin

[darwinbuild] Building ChatServer

I followed the directions on the darwinbuild web pages, including setting up a disk image for builds, but I can't get very many things to build. I tried to run darwinbuild ChatServer and I got an error that make was not found. I next ran darwinbuild xnu, and that succeeded, but now the ChatServer build gives an error that gcc can't create executables. I have successfully built Libinfo, but for example I have been unable to build WebCore, Security, or ChatServer. Am I missing a step here?

-depsbuild was/is an option to load binary roots using another (typical older) build than the "current" build, for instance to allow 8A428 to provide roots when building projects from the 8B15 plist. Darwinbuild 0.7.1 supports a more sophisticated mechanism where if the "current" build doesn't have a binary root, the build inheritance tree is traversed to satisfy the root, which should remove the need for explicit -depsbuild. Indeed, it's not clear how -depsbuild would interact with this new code anyway. I plan on removing this option soon. If you've been using -depsbuild, try not using it. Things should work equivalently, if not better. Shantonu

[darwinbuild] using darwinbuild for pure darwin projects?

How do we build projects that are not part of the Apple release using darwinbuild? In anticipation of the upcoming OpenDarwin 8.2.1 release I'd like to make sure the ODTulipDriver project can be packaged and built using the same mechanisms as the rest of the OS. I've looked at the plists and see how to create an entry for ODTulipDriver. It's essentially a copy & paste of the entry for AppleBMACEthernet. This leads to a few questions. 1. How do we create the tarball that darwinbuild will look for and download? 2. Once the aforementioned tarball is created, should it be uploaded to darwinsources.opendarwin.org or will it live somewhere else? (Perhaps a special place for pure darwin projects so it doesn't "pollute" the OS sources directory?) I've written and tested the code so the driver works with the new KPIs. I haven't committed it to the OD cvs yet but will do so in the coming days. After I do that though, I want to make sure I can get on board for the 8.2.1 release. cr
