I had a similar problem a few months back, where codesign for an embedded tool didn't work in the Release config. Release vs. Debug builds and launchd codesigning

I'm using a simple self sign cert to sign my app. It works great when building for Debug. When I build for release I get this: error from SMJobBless: 8/27/09 Aug 27, 10:50:09 PM Path Finder[65031] Error! Error Domain=kSMErrorDomainFramework Code=3 UserInfo=0xeb5d80 "The operation couldn’t be completed. (kSMErrorDomainFramework error 3 - The client and tool did not match requirements.)" I've check my settings and I don't see anything different with Debug and Release, so I don't think it's that. Anyone seen this? -steve

launchd tool crashing

I got a launchd tool working using ServiceManagement framework. It runs as root. The tool is setup to run for a few seconds after the last request and it will keep alive as long as requests are coming in using MachServices. When idle, the tool exits. If I try to run the tool a second time, it crashes. I found out the problem was on the application side I was using an NSConnection that connected to the tool that has already died. I didn't get any NSConnectionDied notifications or anything, so there's no way for me to know on the application side when the connection has gone down. If I try to use that connection, I get crashes, and I'm afraid there since this launchd stuff is so crash prone that it won't be reliable. I'm also sending an object "byRef" using DO from the application to my tool so the tool can talk back to my application. I'm using the same connection I get from connectionWithRegisteredName. My application does this to connect to the tool: NSConnection* connection = [NSConnection connectionWithRegisteredName: [self hostServerName] host:nil]; Do I need to invalidate the NSConnection before the tool dies? I think I just delete it. The crash is 100% repeatable. If I don't reuse the NSConnection on the app side for the next incoming request, it works fine. SMJobBless help?

I'm surprised that 10.6 is being released on Friday and there still is very little source code or documentation for new APIs from Apple. Has anyone successfully used SMJobBless? If someone can translate the docs from the header, that would help. What is "Each string is a textual representation of a code signing requirement"? A sample app would help. Does the blessed tool get moved or copied somewhere? I need my tool to be able to find frameworks in my apps bundle. Is this a problem? The "daemons must live for at least 60 seconds" factoid

It's a commonly repeated piece of folklore that if your launchdaemon completes in under 60 seconds, launchd will assume it has crashed and will re-launch it. I have a LaunchAgent with a 2 minute StartInterval, which exits quickly if there are no available jobs for it to work on. launchd tends to run it once due to the StartInterval, then again 15 seconds later - presumably because it didn't live for at least 60 seconds. Adding "sleep(60)" to the end of my LaunchAgent seems to prevent it from launching the 2nd time around. However, I can't find any actual documentation that mentions this, and I'm sure I've heard somewhere that it was a Tiger bug/feature only, due to be fixed in Leopard - this appears to not be the case. It seems an odd feature, too - why relaunch something that exited with a successful status code? Is there any official documentation of this behaviour? -Jonathan del Strother

Heya, I had a bit of a nightmare this morning trying to get logging information out of launchd. Apple's advice is to add 'launchd.* /var/log/launchd.log' to the /etc/syslog.conf file. As far as I can tell, this doesn't have any effect, and 'launchd' isn't listed as one of the facilities (auth, authpriv, cron...) mentioned in the syslog.conf manpage. I finally got some output by adding '*.debug /var/log/debug.log' to syslog.conf, but it would be great if I could narrow that down some more. Any hints? Jonathan del Strother
