launchd.plist & SMJobBless

Hi list, I have problems in removing calls to AuthorizationExecuteWithPrivileges. So far I played with both SMJobBless and ssd (simple socket daemon) sample codes and I am happy with them separately. I also played successfully with unix sockets but now time has come to put everything altogether. For ssd, we have to install in /Library/LaunchDaemons a custom plist containing definitions of a Socket that will be used to launch the daemon on demand. For SMJobBless, we seem to have no hand on the plist, except for the Label key. Every other key seems to be ignored by SMJobBless. The question is: what is the recipe to tell launchd to launch a daemon installed through SMJobBless ? Thanks in advance & regards J. Laurens

Loading WatchPath job: Launches if path changed within prior 0.5 secs

STEPS TO REPRODUCE: • Install a launchd plist file, with a single WatchPaths parameter, but do not load it. • Touch the watched path • Load the job EXPECTED RESULT: Nothing should happen, because the file was touched *before* the job was loaded. ACTUAL RESULT: The job launches its program. * * * If I insert a slight wait between touching and loading, the job does not launch. In the script which follows, the threshold wait is about 0.5 seconds. In an application I've written, which invokes launchctl via NSTask, the threshold wait is 1-2 seconds. This seems to be a bug in launchd (Mac OS X 10.7.2)? You can demo it by running the following shell script. The script attempts to experiment with different wait (sleep) values, but unexpectedly, only the first run of the function doTest ever "launches". • If the first sleep value is about 0.4 or less, I get one "launch". • If it's 0.5, I may or may not get one "launch". • If it's 0.6 or more, I get zero "launches". • Playing with the other sleep values in the script does not affect the results. • Probably, the first time you run the script, there is no "launch". Retry. As you can see, there's a lot which does not make sense here. Any explanations of this behavior would be appreciated. SMJobBless sample code not working

Hi folks, I am currently migrating my code to Lion by removing any AuthorizeExecuteWithPrivileges call. Last week, I downloaded SMJobBless sample code and I could build and launch the app successfully. Everything worked as expected and I could see that the service was available. Now, I can't get it to work any longer, the only information from the system log is 27/10/11 16:41:49,784 launchdadd: FAILURE: Job com.apple.bsd.SMJobBlessHelper could not be installed from .../build/Release/SMJobBlessApp.app/Contents/Library/LaunchServices/com.apple.bsd.SMJobBlessHelper, reason 3. Any clue ? TIA

Skip first execution at start/wake for StartInterval/StartCalendarInterval jobs

I'd like to have a LaunchDaemon with a StartInterval or StartCalendarInterval, but I don't want it to run at startup or wake wether or not instances have been missed while the computer was off or asleep. I want it to run for the first time _later_, x seconds after startup/wake (and every x seconds thereafter) or at the specified calendar dates/times. Can this be accomplished by setting my intervals and then leaving -- or explicitly setting -- RunAtLoad as false? That's my reading, but it's not backed up yet by any testing. It'd be good to know if skipping the first run is the expected behavior and if there are any idiosyncracies in that between Leopard, Snow Leopard, and Lion (especially the last two). Install and load a launch daemon without a reboot

What is considered the current best practice for installing and then running a launch daemon, while avoiding a reboot? I didn't see exactly what I was looking for in my list archive or found it in any documentation on installation packages. I have reviewed TN2083, specifically the "Starting a Daemon" section. That answers most of my question but it would be helpful to have confirmation. Besides the conditions listed in TN2083, I'd like my installer to behave well when installed to a disk other than the current startup volume. I need to target Mac OS X 10.5 and 10.6. It looks as if I'd need to test for the right conditions and then run launchctl to load the property list. Roughly -- not production code -- it looks like I'd need a postinstall and postupgrade script to do the following: # Test if the destination volume for the payload and the root volume path are the same if [ "$3" = "$4" ] ; then # Quick test to see if the script is run by root if [ `/usr/bin/whoami` = "root" ] ; then /bin/launchctl load "$3/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vendor.launchdaemon.plist" fi fi exit 0 Is that the right approach? you may have to set a reuse flag for the port still. Even unix domain sockets, despite being a file, still have a port that you may need to specify to reuse

Setup LaunchD project

Hello there, I have joined this project today, and I need some help is setting up project so that it builds properly. I checked out code and tried to build it but it gave me whole lot of errors as you can see below. As mentioned on wiki, I checked out code from using this command, $ svn co http://svn.macosforge.org/repository/launchd/trunk/ launchd Can somebody help me with proper setup. Did I missed anything? Once it builds up, I would also appreciate if somebody can tell me how to get it running so that I can debug. I am sorry if these questions sounds silly to you and but this information is not present on wiki page of LaunchD project. UNIX SOCKET problem

Hi, I use a UNIX socket to talk with a deamon. It works fine when I start my deamon listening but when I shutdown the deamon and I restart it I get a listening error: invalid argument... I have to delete the mysocketfile.sock from filesystem and then restart the deamon... then is recreated by the app (deamon) and all is doing fine... note: a) I unlink the socket Address path when I create the socket b) I close the socket when I quit the app... any Idea???? I have to remove the socket file from the filesystem??? thnx + regards Gian Luca

Removing a job installed with SMJobBless

What is the recommended way to remove a job installed using SMJobBless? I am replacing use of AuthorizationExecuteWithPrivileges with SMJobBless and friends for a run-once privileged helper. Since the helper plist and daemon get installed as root, their files cannot be removed (nor can 'launchctl remove' be used) from a normal app due to permissions. However I am able to do all this cleanup from within the helper itself after it's done performing its task, and it works just fine. Is this safe to do? Is there a better alternative? Kevin
