Hi. Now that I'm a committer, I have some questions about how I'm meant to be proceeding with my duties of editing ports. There are two titles on the wiki that sound like they would answer this question -- CommitterDocs and NewCommittersGuide -- unfortunately both of these documents explain very little. Following basically these instructions (which seem like they should be in the wiki somewhere)... http://lists.macosforge.org/pipermail/macports-users/2006-October/ 000488.html ...(except using https) I checked out the trunk from the repository and changed my sources.conf to point to the dports directory. Then I set about making changes to the ImageMagick port, updating it to the current version. Now that I've done that, "port outdated" still doesn't show my installed ImageMagick to be outdated. Is it supposed to? Or am I supposed to force the installation with "sudo port upgrade -ncuf ImageMagick", which is what I'm doing?

portfile howto?

Hello, I plan to write a portfile for rb-appscript [1]. I've never written a portfile before, so I was looking for some documentation. I found this in the archives: http://www.opendarwin.org/pipermail/darwinports/2002-October/015288.html which mentions a non-working link: http://www.opendarwin.org/projects/darwinports/portfileHOWTO.php Is that portfile howto available somewhere else? Or is there a newer version somewhere? Update to xemacs Portfile

Friends - I have made a few changes to the xemacs Portfile, and I have attached the modified Portfile. Should I install this, and if so could someone point me to directions on how to do that? Alternatively, would someone else do this? The modifications are to install xemacs 21.4.19 rather than 21.4.17, and the addition of a mule variant, that works properly with the sumo variant (I believe). Peace - John

Keeping local modifications

Hey, I'm keeping some local modifications to some portfiles to keep them working with a bunch of local modifications to the system. In order to do this, I copy the ports I modify to a local dports dir and make the changes there so they won't be lost when I do a selfupdate. Is there some way that I can make my locally modified ports totally replace the official ones? Just adding a Revision tag makes them impossible to distinguish in the list and I also see both versions. Is anyone else doing this and how do you usually do it? -- kent

compatibility symbolic links for ncurses and ncursesw

The zsh-devel port is linked by default with the Mac OS X ncurses (in /usr/lib) because only the Mac OS X ncurses library has compatibility symbolic links, e.g. /usr/lib/libtermcap.dylib -> libncurses.5.4.dylib /usr/lib/libcurses.dylib -> libncurses.5.4.dylib (the first one is used by zsh by default, and the second one is used when the --with-curses-terminfo configure option is given). But this ncurses version is buggy when the Emacs terminal is used (with TERM set to its default value eterm-color). Try emacs -eval '(progn (set-buffer (apply ''make-term "zsh" "zsh" nil ''("-f"))) (term-mode) (term-char-mode) (switch-to-buffer "*zsh*"))' for instance... Unfortunately, to be able to link zsh against ncurses or ncursesw, zsh doesn't have --with-ncurses and --with-ncursesw options (I've sent a request to the zsh-workers mailing-list), so that one can't add ncurses and ncursesw variants for the time being. However, even if this is added to zsh, it would be fine to have compatibility symbolic links for the ncurses and ncursesw ports. To avoid an obvious clash when both ports are installed, these symbolic links could be added by a "compat" variant (of course, only one "compat" variant can be installed at a time). There's still the (minor) problem that one can't depend on a variant, so that the user will have to be careful when installing ports if he wants the right version of the curses library. MacPorts Site

Is the MacPorts site going to be migrated over from opendarwin.org or are we just waiting for when that gets turned off like the opendarwin.org wiki was? Issues building a port for kloc

Hi all, I was having some fun counting project source code with kloc(1) and decided to play my hand at building a port for it. I've run into some issues and was hoping for some feedback from the experts! 1) kloc-3.6.tar.gz has a text file called "TEST" and a directory called "test". This is fine on most filesystems, but not on case- insensitive HFS+ 2) as an extremely simple program, kloc doesn't have a configure script. I couldn't find any Portfile opts to straight up just skip the configure stage I got around these problems and was able to build the port by just touching a fake configure file and renaming "TEST" to "TESTS", but these require me to produce my own tarball distribution. Any tips? Thanks, -jamie

New port not commited

Hello developer list, Almost 2 weeks ago, I submitted a new port (XMLStarlet, ticket #10838 <http://trac.macports.org/projects/macports/ticket/10838>) It's quite frustrating to see nobody cared to commit it :-( Moreover, I asked on october 7th on this same mailing list what should be the procedure to submit new port but nobody replied, also quite frustrating :-( I understand MacPorts is in a transition period but I hope this is going to stabilize and that new ports are going to be commited.
