Let's add variant descriptions

How hard would it be to let variants have descriptions? I think the time has come for that feature to be implemented. Sometimes the single word or abbreviation comprising the variant name just really isn't enough information for the user to fully understand what the variant does. I have been trying to add descriptions to my ports' variants, in the comments in the portfile, but I would like to be able to display these to the user. I see two necessary steps: 1) Allow some (optional!) syntax within the variant to specify a description, like variant macplus { description Emulate a Macintosh Plus with 4 MB RAM and 6 drives ... } or variant macplus { variant_description Emulate a Macintosh Plus with 4 MB RAM and 6 drives ... } 2) Modify the display of "port info" to show the variant description, like $ port info minivmac minivmac 2.8.2, Revision 1, emulators/minivmac http://minivmac.sourceforge.net/ Mini vMac is a Macintosh emulator. It emulates the earliest Macs, from the original Mac 128K (built 1984-85) to the Mac SE (1987-1990). The default is to emulate a Mac Plus (1986-1990); this is also the best-tested and therefore recommended emulation. To use Mini vMac, you need a ROM file from the type of machine you're emulating. Mac ROMs are copyrighted by Apple, so you must extract the ROM from a real physical Mac that you own. Use the CopyROM program for this, which you can download from the Mini vMac web site (More > Extras). Hello Jann! Just wanted to point out a couple of things about this last commit of yours. We have the policy of making one commit per logical block of changes, but down here you condensed three blocks in a single commit: new port (py-glewpy), dependency rework for a different port (py-matplotlib) and version update and other changes to yet a third port (py-pil). For future reference, each of these three should be separate commits, and in case of the third one the log should detail what the other changes are about (besides the version updates). It's a matter of policy, for improved tracking, hope you don't mind! Other than that, great work, keep it up! Port maintainer[s]

Hi, I dont' know if my installation is broken, because I'm facing a new problem. Macports is updated at today (version 1.430). I was trying to spot the mutt-devel maintainer, because 1.5.15 is out, using port maintanier but: [sbranzo] gufo ~ $ port maintainers mutt-devel Unrecognized action "maintainers" [sbranzo] gufo ~ $ port maintainer mutt-devel Unrecognized action "maintainer" (and as a side note mutt-devel is orphaned) Can someone confirm this bug? MP # of ports compared to other managers

Okay, this may seem like a silly question, but it seems the the rate of new ports has tapered off and we're treading water at near 4000. No doubt that will creep up slowly, but I see Fink has roughly 8,000 and FreeBSD double that. Is that because they have more legacy software that we don't use? I just wonder what type of stuff they have that we don't, especially since it seems like we're not missing too much that people are asking for. What is it about our user base that makes us content with 1/2 the number of available ports? Or is it just me? Are we content with our available ports? Mark

Project identification & naming

Evening everyone! Working on my dp2mp-move branch just now I came up with some questions regarding our naming as a project, as there are still some references to darwinports, opendarwin and, eeehhhmmm, Apple in key parts of our sources, and I'm not too sure what we should do. My biggest question is with respect to the "com.apple.<target>" naming we still use to identify each of the installation stages: can we move that to something more consistent like "org.macports.<stage>"? Note that I didn't ask "should we" just there, simply because a full migration to the new name is the very objective of the branch, so that's a given. I'm asking: can we? are there any legal ramifications of any sort if we do, given that it was Apple who first started the project? Please bear with me if these seem like silly questions, not only am I not a lawyer but also I don't live in the US, so I'm not at all acquainted with pertinent legal procedures, if any. Any other roadblocks to moving that to our own naming? (other than bugs that will arise, which I'll look after as I work on the branch). On the same tune, I'm also wondering about our identification: can we call ourselves a "working group"? a "vendor"? a "distributor"? none? all? For an example of what I'm referring to, check out the differences between the base/src/package1.0/portrpmpackage.tcl file in trunk and in the dp2mp-move branch: trunk: (Line No. 159)%define distribution DarwinPorts (Line No. 160)%define vendor OpenDarwin branch: (Line No. 159)%define distribution MacPorts (Line No. 160)%define vendor MacPorts It would be good to get a clear definition of what we are and aren't, in order to call ourselves consistently. That's perfectly reasonable for this use.
