Fwd: upgrading a port with no maintainer

Dev, Suppose I wanted to upgrade a version of a port with no maintainer,say, http://www.macports.org/ports.php?by=name&substr=pixen, from version 2.2 to 3.0. How might I go about making the change on my local box (leaving the submitting a patch process out for the time being)? Is there a doc you could point me to? I'm familiar with how to perform this task in gentoo, but not yet very familiar with macports. - Kevin

Hi, This ticket (libwww) has not been taken care of for a while. <http://trac.macports.org/projects/macports/ticket/12851> A package I maintain (science/grads) depends upon libwww. For grads, the contributed patch seems to be sufficient. However, I imagine that libwww should affect a number of packages. I would like to commit the patch and close the ticket for grads but I would like to hear opinions of those who maintain packages affected by libwww. Takeshi

Milestoning duplicate tickets?

Some of us are clashing on Trac: in one corner, those who keep duplicate tickets and/or set them to appropriate milestones; in the other corner, those (read, only me, I think) who take them out of milestones when encountering them. The way I see it, if the ticket is a duplicate of an "original" one, and said original is already properly milestoned, then what's the benefit of also having the duplicate in the same milestone? And if said original is *not* properly milestoned, then it should be ;-) But that's of course only one side of the ring. What does the other side have to say about it? Regards,... -jmpp

/opt/local/bin/python2.5 as default MacPorts' "python" interpreter

Currently there is no official "python" interpreter for MacPorts (in the past there was a link to python2.3 even when python24 was installed, IIRC) but many Python programs (or their shebang lines) expect a "python" command in the PATH, otherwise Leopard's python2.5 is picked from its symbolic link "/usr/bin/python" and they don't work correctly. This is the case, for example, of Sudoku and Chess in gnome-games. I think that, similarly to the destroot phase of Tcl (ln -s ${prefix}/bin/tclsh8.5 ${destroot}${prefix}/bin/tclsh) an "/opt/local/bin/python" link should be created pointing to the 2.5 version, as MacPorts' "default" Python version.
