Hi all, I'd like to improve some of the Ruby related ports (ruby/rb-*). Since many Ruby tools and libraries are distributed as RubyGems (http://www.rubygems.org/) and fetched from the repository at RubyForge (http://rubyforge.org/) special Porfile keywords do apply. One keyword I find in man Portfiles is ruby.setup, an example being rb-sqlite3 (http://trac.macports.org/projects/macports/browser/trunk/dports/ruby/rb-sql…) ruby.setup {sqlite3 sqlite3-ruby} 1.2.1 setup.rb \ {README LICENSE ChangeLog api doc} \ rubyforge:17096 Parts of this I understand: 1.2.1 is the current version of the sqlite3 gem, 17096 the file ID at RubyForge. What I don't understand and don't find in the MacPorts Guide is the meaning of the parts in curly braces. Can anybody point me to an explanation? In addition to this general problem I wonder about the Portfile for rb-rubygems (http://trac.macports.org/projects/macports/browser/trunk/dports/ruby/rb-rub…) ruby.setup rubygems 0.9.4 setup.rb {README doc examples gemspecs} \ rubyforge:20989 The file at RubyForge is an update gem that looks like it can be used to update an existing installtion of RubyGems to a newer version. This seems like a chicken and egg problem to me: how is it possible to use an update for a package manager (rubygems) if that package manager isn't already installed? pgpool & pgpool-II

mww, the pgpool maintainer, is busy, so I'm sending this out for broader discussion... There is a port for pgpool, but there has been a rewrite of that project into what is being called pgpool-II. They create some of the same binaries, but since one is a rewrite of the other, should they be kept as separate ports? I believe pgpool-II has all of the features of pgpool and supersedes it, but maybe someone still wants pgpool around. I would like to use pgpool-II of course. I have a rudimentary Portfile which works for pgpool-II. So should I also come up with a patch for pgpool to separate out the binary directories so the two ports dont overwrite each other (similar to how postgresql is kept separate)? I use user_msg in Portfiles for extensive documentation, a Howto really, on configuring some ports. For example: http://trac.macports.org/projects/macports/browser/trunk/dports/net/nedi/Po… Though not many do this, it can be a HUGE timesaver for users. But since comparatively few ports have extensive ui_msg's, perhaps it isn't worth the effort. And it would be a low priority for the MP coders since there are other more foundational things to do. And I think evaluating variables might present some problems too. I usually use 'port ed foo' to look at the ui_msg's in another window. Mark

As it is now, patch-configure.diff springs into existence at revision 34521, which is misleading because in fact the patch originally appeared in r778, and someone looking at the patchfile today might well want to know when and why it was originally added.

Question regarding lib dependencies, esp gettext

Hi, I recently contributed a port for tuxmath. It uses gettext and iconv for i18n, as well as SDL and friends. The currently listed dependencies are as follows: depends_lib port:libsdl \ port:libsdl_image \ port:libsdl_mixer \ port:libsdl_ttf \ port:gettext I'm wondering if I need to list gettext - it is not needed for "./configure; make; make install" for my package. Gettext is needed to run a "make dist" on tuxmath, but that isn't part of the MacPorts install process, so I don't think gettext is needed as either a "depends_lib" or "depends_build". At runtime, tuxmath does need both gettext and iconv, but they seem to be included with Leopard itself. However, I can't say for sure if they were present before I installed XCode. I take it that Portfiles do not need to list standard system libraries as dependencies - do gettext and iconv fall into this category? If so, I plan to just eliminate gettext from my list of dependencies. Thanks, -- David Bruce
