Installation Documentation

Hi, Currently we have two tutorials how to install MacPorts: One at http://trac.macosforge.org/projects/macports/wiki/InstallingMacPorts and another one in the guide at http://guide.macports.org/#installing It is obviously difficult to keep them at sync. For example the wiki entry does not cover Leopard at all and still says that you should set DISPLAY. I think they should be unified into one place. Rainer

There is a real need to be able to compile, by default, for the native architecture of your machine. There is also a real need to preseve backwards compatibility. A modest proposal (based on posts and discussions old and new) that might please everyone: * Keep the "universal" variant for building architecture-fat binaries (only). * Add a new "fat" variant for building bit-fat binaries (only). * Activate the "fat" variant by default on all library-class ports. * Add an config option to set the default bit-ness ("always 32-bit" or "native") for all builds. Hi Bill, I got this error message below. Is there something broken? Or is there anything in my port which could cause such an error? I also got the same error for vim-app. This was sent out after commit r34037. sorry about mult trac tickets

Sorry - I seem to have created five tickets, judging from the mails I just got. The first four were my attempts with Konqueror on my Linux box, which seemed to fail to recognize my id/pw. The last one was using FireFox on Linux, which worked smoothly. Not sure where the problem lies. -- David Bruce

Troubleshooting crashing perl app

I am trying to troubleshoot this problem: http://www.mail-archive.com/nfdump-discuss@lists.sourceforge.net/msg00162.h… I am trying to run nfsen, which starts up nfcapd and it crashes and lists the parent process as "perl". The poster in the nfsen conference says he finally compiled and installed non-port version of perl and that solved it, but I don't know how or what options he used. I tried MacPorts perl 5.8 and 5.10 and also tried +threads and +shared variants to no avail. Can anyone give a wild guess as to what might be the problem or how I might troubleshoot this?
