I submitted a new portfile for math/R a couple of weeks ago (that, among other things, fixes the problem below) and it still hasn't been committed. It's in trac as 10855. Kjell Begin forwarded message:

Hello!
I was trying to install R on my iMac using Darwin Ports, but get into trouble with the gcc40. Browsing through the Darwinports mail archives, I found out that gcc40 and gcc41 do not work on Intel based iMac. Then I installed gcc42 without problems.
I was wondering if you could make "deps >= gcc40", as this was a suggestion made in one of the threads. If this is not possible, perhaps you could suggest an alternative fix.
Your help is greatly appreciated.
Best, Dilip
