One significant aspect of this is that, gnustep does not require the GNU gcc compiler. It can work fine with the standard Apple compiler. However I can't seem to change the default. Setting "gnustep.cc cc" in my Portfile doesn't seem to work. In any case, the real problem is that gnustep.cc should not be set at all. gnustep-make discovers and defines CC and passes this on to anything that is build with gnustep-make.
