Users should never need to see the portfile text. This is not useful if you want to, say, browse a category for all ports whose names start with a particular letter. Actually, this keyword is mentioned nowhere in the Guide. I suspect that the keywords test.pre_args and test.post_args also exist, although I have not checked this. #23336: MacPort didn't work out ------------------------------+--------------------------------------------- Reporter: in@… | Owner: macports-tickets@… Type: request | Status: new Priority: Normal | Milestone: MacPorts Future Component: ports | Version: 1.8.2 Keywords: | Port: ------------------------------+--------------------------------------------- I think I was just over my head but I had recently upgraded in Mac OS 10.6 and lost MySQL and phpMyAdmin. I found something about MacPort and it looked like an easy way to install them. It wasn't While MacPort says it installed 35 things I can't find these things on my system and I can't use them. Its as if they are installed on another computer. A couple suggestions I'd like to make. Make a guide for someone who isn't a Unix Admin on how to use (or recommend they not use) MacPort. An example would be great. Also, add a feature to MacPort so that it tells you why its installing all this stuff while its happening. I only wanted MySQL and phpMyAdmin and I ended up with stuff like freetype, gawk, apache2 (which I thought came on every Mac already), m4, and so on..... I have no idea why those things were necessary. If MacPort explained why it installed this stuff it would have been helpful. Its clear a lot of work has gone into this project and a lot of people find it very helpful. So, the fault is on me but you can save people like myself a lot of headaches with a bit of documentation specifically directed to them.
