However, at least some ports use /usr/bin/cc as the default compiler. This ports will likely end up using whatever /usr/bin/cc is set to - for instance llvm-gcc42 if XCode 4 was installed, although the user MAY have selected gcc42 manually and lives under the impression it's used. Then again, I don't know, whether it's a good thing to fiddle outside of $PREFIX, so I'll open this for discussion. I'd vote for yes and moreover possibly also change all other symlinks in /usr/bin as gcc, g++, c++ etc. BUT symlink them to their /opt/local/bin counterparts, so we don't need to keep two places in sync. I forcibly uninstalled libxml2 and reinstalled it, to test an issue. During the reinstall, this message appeared in the debug output, and also a Mac OS X Crash Reporter dialog appeared with similar information: {{{ dyld: lazy symbol binding failed: Symbol not found: _xmlXPathContextSetCache Referenced from: /mp/lib/libxslt.1.dylib Expected in: flat namespace dyld: Symbol not found: _xmlXPathContextSetCache Referenced from: /mp/lib/libxslt.1.dylib Expected in: flat namespace }}} `/mp` is my MacPorts prefix. So it seems that libxml2 is trying to load libxslt.1.dylib during the build. You must modify the port so that this does not happen, because libxml2 does not declare a dependency on libxslt (and it cannot, since libxslt declares a dependency on libxml2, and we cannot have circular dependencies). For example, in emacs: 1) "C-x C-f" to find a file 2) Type "/user@remotemachine:somefile.txt" 3) Asks for password, (type the correct one in). 4) Results in this error: user@remotemachine's password: ControlPath too long Process *tramp/scpc remotemachine* exited abnormally with code 255 In the *Messages* buffer, it says the tramp is doing the command: Tramp: Sending command `exec ssh -o ControlPath=/var/folders/...a_really_long_dir_name.../-Tmp-/tramp.442LsW.%r@%h:%p -o ControlMaster=yes -e none remotemachine' So I think the ControlPath is just too long for ssh. Note: I don't think this is a problem with tramp itself, because I compared the tramp files in /Applications/MacPorts/Emacs.app/Contents/Resources/lisp/net/ with the ones on a linux machine where tramp works, and they're pretty much the same.
