Both versions are supposed to be parallel installable according to the GTK maintainers. This is the first development release of the future stable version 1.8 that is expected to be announced in June 2012 (during Sharkfest'12). This will be the first version where PCAP-NG will be the native file format (changing the native file format from the PCAP to PCAP-NG). Comments are welcome for a better way to accomplish the patch-GDEHELP- Makefile.diff. The problem that I am having is that ${configure.cpp} appears to be empty. I put an explicit "cpp" in the patch to get the ball rolling, but there has to be a better way.
