Half the problem resolved. I have first installed "MacPorts_Framework" successfully using "sudo port install MacPorts_Framework" which is needed for pallet but still installing pallet gives error. Inspection of the bundle shows indeed that qt_menu.nib is not at its expected location "Content/Resources". Project WARNING: The plugin depends on private headers from QtDeclarative module. Project WARNING: To enable it, pass 'QT_PRIVATE_HEADERS=$QTDIR/include' to qmake, where $QTDIR is the source directory of qt. }}} The folks at Gentoo address this issue by allowing to install the required private headers along with Qt (see http://sources.gentoo.org/cgi- bin/viewvc.cgi/gentoo-x86/x11-libs/qt-core/qt- core-4.8.3-r1.ebuild?view=markup, lines 124ff.). For earlier versions of Qt, they made this behaviour dependent on a USE-flag (variant), but as of version 4.8, they always install those headers by default. For adoption in MacPorts, the latter approach would probably be the more desirable one, since we have no real way to make one port depend on a specific variant of another port.
