Whatever the problem was, it seems to be gone now. The patch has been deleted as it made it upstream in http://sourceforge.net/p/libmtp/code/ci/f6a57b3fe5549f9bdfdb7d82c065303f457… . The new configuration flag: see https://github.com/mxcl/homebrew/pull/19883 for people trying to troubleshoot it.
