A few notes on the documentation:- local0 and local1 for syslog facility need to be alligned (local1 IMHO) fping path:- /opt/local/sbin/fping Some startup errors I encountered:- $ sudo /opt/local/bin/smokeping --check Can't locate Smokeping.pm in @INC (@INC contains: /opt/local/lib/smokeping /opt/local/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.12.4/darwin-thread-multi- 2level/auto/RRDs /opt/local/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.12.4/darwin-thread- multi-2level /opt/local/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.12.4 /opt/local/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.12.4/darwin-thread-multi-2level /opt/local/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.12.4 /opt/local/lib/perl5/5.12.4 /darwin-thread-multi-2level /opt/local/lib/perl5/5.12.4 /opt/local/lib/perl5/site_perl /opt/local/lib/perl5/vendor_perl .) at /opt/local/bin/smokeping line 12. I learned by filing a badly formatted ticket, and being corrected. This wasted your time, for which I apologize. Since people that need to report out of dates this are often going to be newcomers, my suggestion is to make the docs "match the audience" a bit better by being more "hand-holding". Two points: (a) it wasn't obvious to set type=upgrade, component=ports. (b) people should be told to CC: the maintainers (and that "{{{port info --maintainers $portname}}}" reveals who that is). Suggested fix: Between 7.3.1 and 7.3.2 insert a new section similar to this: 7.3.x Reporting out-of-date ports / requesting updates to a port * Report out of date ports by opening a bug. See (link to 7.1.3. Trac Ticket Guidelines) * When creating the bug, set: * Summary: [port] [version] [concise description] * Example: "ghostscript @9.0.3_1 please upgrade to newest version 9.0.9" * Type: upgrade * Component: ports * CC: the maintainer. To determine this, see the output of: {{{port info --maintainers PORT}}} * Example: {{{port info --maintainers ghostscript}}} * Port: the name of the port [Note that the fields are listed in the same order as on the form, with the same capitalization. These things matter to newcomers.] Also, in section "7.1.3. Trac Ticket Guidelines" add to the end of the first paragraph: "... If you are reporting an out-of-date port, please see (link to the above section)." All variables/tools a compiler suite can provide are set. Manually set variables are not overwritten. Dependencies are not added for you, as they may be just build- or also run-dependencies. Keep in mind that not all compiler suites might be available on your platform: gcc-3.3 is available on Mac OS X 10.3 and 10.4 PowerPC, gcc-4.0 is available on 10.4+, gcc-4.2 and llvm-gcc-4.2 are available on 10.5 and 10.6, and clang is available on 10.6. It would be good to have: 1. a mention of the fact in Sect. 5.3, (dependencies); 2. complete documentation of the portgroup in 5.9 (portgroups).
