A file compiled by ghc does not display the same behavior. Given a file test.hs: main = putStr $ show (-0.5) And compiling with ghc --make test, the result will run normally. It will require adding 3 new Haskell library ports and updating a couple of others to the latest versions. The new ports are hs-text, hs-deepseq (required by hs-text), and hs-tar. Two other ports which couldn't be upgraded because darcs required the older versions can now be updated hs-hashed-storage and hs-mmap.
