There were some changes made to the portfile which was necessary for the compilation. This could potentially be the source of the problem. I have attached both the log file for the plplot compilation and the portfile. To save some time reading through the portfile, the changes made were the following: 1.) I then tried to install {{{plplot +aquaterm+universal+x11}}} separately, which also fails. Install succeeds for {{{plplot +aquaterm+x11}}}. I am using OS X 10.6.8, and have Xcode 3.2.6 installed. Ports that are related to MacPorts but that don't use this category include: The MacPorts port itself, macportsscripts, pearl, port_cutleaves, and ghsum.
