I found that pkg-config was unable to tell me about gtk2 because parts it required had been uninstalled, by me, when I used port_cutleaves to remove ports it said were not depended on by anything. {{{ $ pkg-config --modversion gtk+-2.0 Package xproto was not found in the pkg-config search path.
