The forking was somehow necessitated by the fact that the original sources were Linux-centric and not truely portable to other platforms. The original author earlier this year has released htop 2.0 with many feature improvements, but also with a cleaned up code base to ease should portability to other platforms than Linux, including Mac OS X.
