If you got to the rsync part, MacPorts ''is'' installed, it just hasn't synced the ports tree yet. Since rsync seems to be unreliable for you, you could use a different method. Two alternatives are presented at [wiki:FAQ#selfupdatefails].
Thank you very much! But my issue is more with the installer. Not having a way to back out other than a force quit is ugly and will be a bigger issue the less savvy the user is. Since a least part of the idea of MacPorts is to make things simpler and doable for the less tech savvy it seems like that's a rough edge you'd want to smooth off.
