 Grr ... the atlas Portfile should handle this condition. How about:
 {{{
 sudo port install gcc49
 sudo port clean atlas suitesparse
 sudo port install atlas +gcc49
 sudo port install suitesparse +atlas
 }}}
 and see if that works.
