Make sure your python25 port is up to date (2.5.4_5 is current).
After updating to `python25 @2.5.4_5`, everything works fine. So it seems my slightly outdated `python25 @2.5.4_0` was the cause of the problem. But that was not easy to guess from the error message I got.
