FYI, it configures and builds fine for me on 10.5.6 Intel with Xcode 3.1.2. Also, to cover all the bases, have you run the following?

I re-installed macports "clean" so the first two had no effect. Hence, the problem remains the same.
Actually the "The MacPorts installation is not outdated so it was not updated" message is not very good. True the base port command was not updated, but it also updates your portindex - without mentioning that - to get the latest portfile versions.
