#49452: rsync.macports.org is very slow -----------------------------+--------------------- Reporter: lpancescu@… | Owner: admin@… Type: defect | Status: new Priority: Normal | Milestone: Component: server/hosting | Version: Resolution: | Keywords: Port: | -----------------------------+--------------------- Comment (by lpancescu@…): In the last four days, I've been seeing the same pattern from here (Germany): no packet loss during the day, but it starts to climb around 17-18:00 CET, peaking at 4-6%, and then decreasing again (this is via Level3; via XO I saw 0% packet loss the entire time, except on Thursday evening, when it was 3% for some time). I'm not sure what the MacPorts project can do about this, it's probably normal, depending on the provider and time of day. I had always thought that companies like Google use CDNs spread all over the world to fight HTTP latency, not data transfer for larger downloads. MacPorts already has a number of mirrors, and they work pretty well - I think redirecting users to a geographically close mirror, be it automatically or through manual configuration, is the right solution. The only problem is the initial installation: it currently takes a long time if you happen to install at the wrong moment, since the main server in always used. Fortunately, clean installs aren't something you need to do that often (probably once a year, because of a new OS X version). -- Ticket URL: <https://trac.macports.org/ticket/49452#comment:14> MacPorts <https://www.macports.org/> Ports system for OS X
