Workaround: Uninstalling 110.71 and installing 110.72 works. Not sure why it fails when upgrading.
This worked for me too. This indicates that the 110.71 smlnj is not able to compile the 110.72 version. Using Intel Mac, Snow Leopard 10.6.7. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling but still get the same error.
