Hello, Inkscape fails to load images. I've tried pngs, tiffs, etc.

I am using File->Import->Images.

The error message is: "Failed to load the requested file /Users/ccarter/Images/white- circle.png"

I am not sure if this is related, but I am also seeing messages at start- up from the terminal of type:" (inkscape:23149): GdkPixbuf-CRITICAL **: gdk_pixbuf_loader_write: assertion 'priv->closed == FALSE' failed"

I did a selfupdate and update outdated earlier today. I am running Macos 10.9.5 with all updates (including XCode).

About inkscape is showing: Inkscape 0.48.5 r10040

I did look through open tickets and couldn't find anything related to this.
