The port currently has no maintainer. The workaround is to install samba3 without the universal variant, which of course doesn't help if you require the universal variant. Or if you put "+universal" in variants.conf. Or if a port you're installing requires that samba3 be installed universal. Otherwise, if you just type "sudo port install samba3", you should not get the universal variant. To explicitly request that you don't want the universal variant, type "sudo port install samba3 -universal".
