I can confirm that your suggestion works but with some specific steps that need to be known for your method to work. William, I received your same error message on my Tiger system until I did the following steps:

sudo port -v uninstall heimdal sudo port -v clean --all gnome-vfs sudo port -vu upgrade gnome-vfs

After doing the above three steps, I had a successful upgrade.

The incorrect ..incomplete way was to do the following steps: sudo port -v uninstall heimdal sudo port -vu upgrade installed There definitely needs to be a clean build of gnome-vfs. You shouldn't have to run: sudo port -v clean --all gnome-vfs I hadn't tried the other basic clean: sudo port -v clean gnome-vfs I am certain that method will work just as well.
