I only see [comment:ticket:28759:1 my comment] which said "gcc45 should only be the default variant if the user has not already chosen the gcc44 variant". I was referring to the line "default_variants +gcc45" which would have caused an error message for users who requested the +gcc44 variant. See wiki:PortfileRecipes#default_variants and wiki:PortfileRecipes#gcc for the proper recipe. I also said "Fewer variants is better" but I was not intending for that remark to be interpreted as applying to the gcc variants, but rather the other variants. I would not suggest removing gcc variants; rather I would advocate adding a gcc47 variant to those already there, so that users can use the latest stable version.
