Unable to execute port: can't read "sysroot": no such variable

      Dear list,

I am trying to install Dia by typing the following:

cd /opt/local/bin

ls
daemondo	portf		portmirror
port		portindex

sudo port install dia

Unable to execute port: can't read "sysroot": no such
variable

What am I doing wrong? 

Mac OS X 10.5.2
