I solved my problem drawing on Ryan's answer to a comparable problem: http://lists.macosforge.org/pipermail/macports-users/2007-November/006987 I had installed xorg-libX11, then uninstalled it and replaced it with Apples X11user.app and X11SDK.app, but in the meantime xaw3d was built on the former.
