Its possible to install the Gimp without using X11! I think it mostly works, but am not a heavy user of it, so I don't know of use cases that may break. http://shyramblings.blogspot.com/2007/11/gimp-on-mac-os-x-without-x11- from.html Randall Wood rhwood@mac.com http://shyramblings.blogspot.com "The rules are simple: The ball is round. I've used MacPorts gimp on quartz and while it has some glitches, it runs very smoothly. Gimp developers use gtk-quartz so it's bound to be as good as gtk- quartz is. yves

Hi I had an issue with "port install gimp2 no_python" : the dependency gail failed to build with : "gdk/gdkx.h : no such file or directory". So I "port clean gail" and then "port install gail +quartz" and now it's ok :-) By the way, why must we remove python support to build it without x11 ? I'm sure there are a lot of useful python plugins for Gimp. Cheers Rémi Leopard, Macbook 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

No connection. You can have it with and without python. with is better, of course ! yves

This (gimp) is a META port for the gimp2 which includes help and documentation, support for icns, jp2000 and RAW formats, content-aware rescaling Gutenprint and scanner frontends and even a nice theme (Nodoka). Mac OS X users also get a Gimp.app bundle, a "Show in Finder" menu and clipboard integration. If you have gimp without X11, can you still have other GTK applications with X11? I tried to install gtk +quartz once but I had to uninstall the X11 version. Or is there a way around to have both? -- Piet van Oostrum <piet@cs.uu.nl> URL: http://www.cs.uu.nl/~piet [PGP 8DAE142BE17999C4] Private email: piet@vanoostrum.org
HI I've built Gimp without X11 thinking I could use my pen tablet in it, but Gimp, even running in Quartz, don't recognize it. is there a way around that would made possible to use my pen tablet (a Wacom Bamboo fun) and pressure sensitivity in Gimp without rebooting under Linux (what I'm doing currently)? I don't mind running it under X11 or Quartz, but Apple's X11 doesn't support XInputEvent. may be XDarwin does ? And if so, how could I build the linuxwacom module ? I need the Kernel headers for this. Rémi Leopard, Macbook 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

I would report this problem upstream to the gimp developers. (http:// www.gimp.org). It is likely that gimp is relying on highly linux- specific device discovery mechanisms that degrade to very generic mechanisms on OS X to discover and manage alternate input devices. I would not expect the linuxwacom module to work on OS X even if you did get the linux kernel headers, because the linux and OS X kernels use different hardware management mechanisms.
