I don't see a reason, definitely we could at least have a variant for it... However, configure typically sets that by itself if it detects the system's ability... Is that different for fftw-3? I was able to successfully build fftw-3 with the "--enabled-shared" option. I submitted a ticket and patch to this effect: http://trac.macports.org/projects/macports/ticket/14914
