Strange. p5-xml-parser is in the perl5 portgroup, so it should automatically depend on the perl5.8 port. Is the perl5.8 port installed and activated? Does /opt/local/bin/perl exist?

I have a MacBook Pro using the most recent version of Leopard and I am also using Porticus as a GUI for MacPorts if that matters.
