I'm not totally clear on what's happening here and I am a little short on time... but I think you are running Apple's Python or even some "MacPython" supplied interpreter with a library path pointing at some other install. The python module for the waste textengine is installed with Apple's release but not python.org's afaik. same thing with tkinter. What does `which python` output? Have you symlinked either interpreter or python library directory to force which one gets used perhaps? What is your PYTHONPATH? To discover library path search order in a given python interpreter you can fire it up and then execute:
import sys, pprint pprint.pprint(sys.path)

If /sw is not in my path, why is db.h being found there. And, why is stuff in Apple's python linked against stuff in /sw? Or, is this cruft left over from my previous installed ports, which were compiled when /sw was in the path? Maybe I should deleted /opt and start over. Is there a way to keep /sw in place, yet ensure that it does not pollute ports that I compile? I use a lot of stuff in /sw, and I want to keep it available while ports are being compiled. I would try port clean --work all and in case you use archive mode (wont hurt if you dont) port clean --archive all This way you save bandwidth downloading sources again as compared to running clean --all. Then, I would run the periodic jobs manually once. I have not checked what is done therein, so this may be woodoo, but I think it is some kind of basic house- keeping in case you dont know where there might be settings that rule in without you knowing about them. sudo periodic daily weekly monthly Then check whether old python port were uninstalled properly: port installed | grep py* Uninstall the stuff that might interfere with your current installation. Maybe this is best done first of all. Now, if it does not work afterwards, you can read your /etc/profile and .profile and .login files to find strange environment variable settings. Tell us about your findings. Good luck, Christian

I'm not sure exactly what the above means. Is this referring to Fink? If so, I changed my path to not have /sw/bin in it. Renaming / sw is a bit of a problem for me, as I discovered when I tried it earlier this afternoon. The way my login shells are set, they expect to find /sw. If not, they don't load, and I can't change from my normal, unpriviledged user to an user with administrative priviledges, And I can't rename it back to /sw as my normal user. I eventually had to reboot in Target Disk Mode, and use another Mac to sort things out. Ugh. After doing all the above, python24 builds. But, looking at the build output, I see hundreds of references to /sw/lib or /sw/include, e.g. /usr/bin/gcc-4.0 -bundle -undefined dynamic_lookup build/ temp.darwin-8.8.0-Power_Macintosh-2.4/grpmodule.o -L/opt/local/lib -L/ sw/lib -L/usr/local/lib -o build/lib.darwin-8.8.0-Power_Macintosh-2.4/ grp.so Where are these coming from, if /sw is not in my path? Is there no way to prevent MacPorts from being polluted with Fink stuff, short of renaming or removing /sw? If renaming it works, why wouldn't removing it from the path work? Are new login shells being created, and my login scripts are putting /sw in their paths? Or, is /sw in the default search path for the python build? Kevin Horton Ottawa, Canada

Strange, I think, really. But I am no expert. As macports is mostly selfcontained, I would make the assumption that there must be a re- ference to /sw in some configuration file. Does Spotlight index /opt/local? I have not checked myself. Or, you might use the search feature of TextWrangler to search across the content of all files within a directory. It might be a bit too tough to search the whole /opt/local that way, but what about /opt/local/etc or /opt/local/etc/ports? For me, this is more convenient then doing the same on the shell. I am off now (it is late in Germany), Christian

I greped the Python2.4.3 source for /sw, and found the culprit, I think: Python-2.4.3/setup.py: # Fink installs into /sw by default Python-2.4.3/setup.py: add_dir_to_list (self.compiler.library_dirs, '/sw/lib') Python-2.4.3/setup.py: add_dir_to_list (self.compiler.include_dirs, '/sw/include') Python-2.4.3/setup.py: '/sw/include/db4', Python-2.4.3/setup.py: '/sw/include/db3', It would probably be better if MacPorts patched out those references to /sw. Until then, I'll have to find a good way to move /sw out of the way. Maybe I'll create a new user, with his shells having no reference to /sw at all. Then I could safely move /sw out of the way temporarily, I think. Kevin Horton Ottawa, Canada
