vncserver with Aqua gui
Greetings - I am setting up a mac with multiple remote users. The users would like to have access to the standard Mac OS desktop via vnc. From what I have found so far on the internet, this might be possible as long as multiple user switching is enabled (which it is). I installed tightvnc and got vncserver running but is is showing me an X desktop instead. does anyone know how to get the Aqua desktop displayed? thanks Mike

Thanks. I just tried it and it works except that the users first have to log in at the console before they can log in remotely. there seems to be not way to start the Aqua window server from the command line...that I know of...yet. cheers Mike On Sep 5, 2007, at 7:32 PM, Lorenz Schori wrote:

Hello, Why use Vine Server when Apple's Remote Desktop does the same thing (is VNC) and is a feature of OS X Tiger? I use TightVNC to connect to other Macs all of the time with this. If there are features that Vine Server (formerly OSXvnc) has that ARD does not, I would like to know what they are. What VNC client for Mac do you and/or others recommend? Based on my experience, Chicken of the VNC appears to have stagnated, and I have been using the Java version of TightVNC (good performance, reasonable UI) and, aside from invoking it via Terminal.app, am pleased with it. Just my .02 USD, I still use CotVNC but I'm starting to use JollysFastVNC (http://www.jinx.de/JollysFastVNC.html) more frequently. Still in "beta" according to the developer, but it works just fine for my needs.
I enabled Apple Remote Desktop on this machine and it seems to work fine except that it does not seem to allow multiple simultaneous users to log in graphically. cheers Mike On Sep 6, 2007, at 3:14 AM, Anthony Michael Agelastos wrote:

I thought Apple Remote Desktop cost money? http://www.apple.com/remotedesktop/ I've used Vine Server (MacPorts port: osxvnc) and Chicken of the VNC (MacPorts port: cotvnc) for years.

The client costs money. The sever can be activated in the System Preferences.

A couple of reasons why I use Vine Server instead of ARD's bundled VNC server: - ARD doesn't support 8 or 16 bit color depth unless connected to Apple's paid ARD client/mgr - Vine Server starts after reboot allowing complete remote graphical control - Vine Server will run multiple desktop sessions after users login using fast switching I remotely manage Macs using command-line but sometimes need to login graphically. Running VNC at 24-bit color over a VPN tunnel is a disaster, however it works fine at 16-bit color but by default the bundled ARD VNC server will not allow connections at lower color depths. BB

I couldn't figure out how to get Mouse-2 (right click) through using the cotvnc client... With osxvnc (vine) it just works. Greetings, Jochen -- Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit http://www.Jochen- Kuepper.de Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité GnuPG key: CC1B0B4D Sex, drugs and rock-n-roll
