Hello, I am a newbie to the Mac. I am trying to use the MacPorts system, version 1.5. I saw another post to this list stating that /opt/local/bin/portslocation has never existed. It does not exist on my system. I'm trying to install the gaim port. The instructions on http://gaim.darwinports.com/ say to cd to the aforementioned directory. The date on that page is July 18, 2007. I try "port install gaim", ignoring the directory for the moment, and the port system cannot find it. If I do a Google search for /opt/local/bin/portslocation, I get 27,800 hits. At least for the first several pages, it's all Mac related. Should portslocation exist or not. If not, is there some additional configuration I need to do for MacPorts for it to be able to find gaim. Thanks, -David Robertson -Berkeley Lab

As I understand it, darwinports.com is not to be trusted in general, and certainly not in particular with respect to Macports. (I am willing to be corrected; I got that impression from another thread on this mailing list.) Darwinports.com and macports.org are not affiliated. So whatever you read on there probably has no bearing to your macports installation If you'd like to see whether the gaim port is available on your system: sudo port search gaim Unfortunately for you, I don't think it is. -Denis

Correct, anything not using the name "MacPorts" is not official. darwinports dot com is someone's attempt to provide 3rd party support, and it is not accurate. And a file called portslocation has never existed. There is a new guide under development here: http://homepage.mac.com/duling/macports/guide.html to tell you how to install ports. Looks like the gaim project has been renamed http://sourceforge.net/projects/gaim/ to pidgin. Try installing the pidgin port. Mark

As the project was renamed to "Pidgin" [1], the port was renamed, too. So you want to install the port pidgin. Rainer [1] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pidgin_%28software%29#Naming_dispute
