No, you need X11 and XCode according to the MacPorts install instructions. See the items marked 1 and 2 on the install page: http://www.macports.org/install.php The error "configure: error: C compiler cannot create executables" implies you dont have XCode installed. -Bill On Mar 13, 2008, at 4:35 PM, Eduard Andreas Wamister wrote:

Related issue: I installed Gimp a while ago, along with X11, and it worked. Then an Apple upgrade came along, and Gimp quit with the message, "You must have X11 installed". Since I only use gimp occasionally, I didn't worry about it, but it appears the Apple upgrade changed something with X (which still appears int he finder and "runs". This week, I installed Wireshark which also runs under X, and after the installation Gimp started working. The issue is this: The Wireshark installation took THREE HOURS! and now, a cold boot of the Mac takes over five minutes! I've concluded that I must remove this stuff, and (maybe) start over. I violated my cardinal rule - before installing software, be sure you know how to remove it! In my defense, the Mac has made me lazy in that regard, with its "drag to the trash" uninstall procedure. I can get rid of Gimp that way, and I can do a "port uninstall" to get rid of Wireshark, but how do I get rid of Mac Ports? (Wireshark is almost useless due to the AirPort not working in promiscuous mode, and as i said I only use Gimp occasionally.) Walt On Mar 13, 2008, at 7:41 PM, William Siegrist wrote:

Replying to my own post - I confess to being hasty. I don't know why it took three hours to install wireshark; I had done so under OS X 10.4 and it only took a few minutes. I was more disturbed by the very long boot time. After a night's sleep (and thanks for the info, Daniel) I went back into my notes for the last time I had trouble with boot-up and found the procedure for a Safe Boot. At that time the Apple technician explained that unlike Windows Safe Mode, Safe Boot in OS X actually does some repair work, which is why it takes so long. Anyway, I did a Safe Boot, the Repair Permissions, and the three cron jobs (daily, weekly, monthly) that I neglect so frequently, and now my Mac is happy again! I thought I'd pass that on in case others are having similar problems. Two issues remain: If I try to start Gimp by itself, it fails with a message box, "Failed to start X11" However if I start Wireshark first, Gimp runs OK since wireshark has started X11 (and does not shut it down when you exit Wireshark). I remember from some Linux distros I have used that there is s "startx" command to run X11, but that just gives me a screenful of error messages. Fatal server error: Cannot establish any listening sockets - Make sure an X server isn't already running AbortDDX Quitting XQuartz... giving up. xinit: Operation timed out (errno 60): unable to connect to X server xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error. xauth: error in locking authority file /Users/walts/.Xauthority This was after a fresh start, so unless started automatically, no X server was running. For now, if I need Gimp I can work around it by running Wireshark first, but I'd really like to find the "right" way to do this! Now, does anybody know how to make the Air Port work in promiscuous mode? Walt On Mar 14, 2008, at 8:16 AM, Walt Scrivens wrote:

Run command requiring X11 like this: $ open-x11 gimp This will take care of starting X11.

Even more simple, put the X11.app into your dock and just click it to run it. Rainer
