Installed Beta 2 and can't get it launch. Complaining about an undefined method. macirb /usr/local/bin/macirb:in `<main>': undefined method `bind' for IRB::SLex:Class (NoMethodError)

I'm on Snow Leopard (10.6.2), using xmpp4r. I can connect to the jabber server fine using Apple's stock Ruby (1.8.7 (2008-08-11 patchlevel 72)) but not with MacRuby 0.5 (beta 2). When I try the same code with MacRuby, I get this: core:in `connect:': getaddrinfo: nodename nor servname provided, or not known (SocketError) from /Library/Frameworks/MacRuby.framework/Versions/0.5/usr/lib/ruby/1.9.0/resolv.rb:690:in `initialize:' That line is from this code: class ConnectedUDP < Requester # :nodoc: def initialize(host, port=Port) super() @host = host @port = port ==> @sock = UDPSocket.new(host.index(':') ? Fcntl::F_SETFD end That code is the same as in 1.8.7 (though there are other differences in the file). I searched around and found references to the same error message coming from using drb on 10.5.3 stock ruby, but notice that my stock Ruby works. I'll do a little more digging. Activerecord won't load

Hi - I have macruby 0.5 beta 2 installed, and I'm having trouble with activerecord. First I installed activerecord (and activesupport) via macgem. Macgem reports that it installed activesupport-2.3.5 and activerecord-2.3.5. I'm having trouble when trying to load activerecord though... From macirb, here's what happens: $ macirb irb(main):001:0> require 'rubygems' => true irb(main):002:0> require 'activerecord' NameError: undefined method `format_datetime' for class `Logger' from core:in `require:' Am I doing something wrong? Thoughts about aliasing

I was thinking that especially when testing the performance of a pure ruby based class (Set) against a Cocoa class (NSSet/NSMutableSet), it would be useful to alias methods in the Cocoa side of things. My thought was then you could have a single API to use in the rest of your code and you can just switch which class you are using. In my case I wanted to alias include? to containsObject and add to addObject. I suppose that this could also be done by aliasing on the ruby side of things (alias containsObject to include?), right now I just create methods that forward for me. What I was wondering is if it would be useful to be able to have something like this work in the future: {{{ class NSSet alias include? containsObject end }}} Right now you will get "only pure Ruby methods can be aliased (`containsObject:' is not) (ArgumentError)". But I was thinking maybe when it sees that the original method is pure ruby it could act as it currently does, but then when it sees an Objective-C method as the original it could do something like on the Objective-C side use method_getImplementation() and method_setImplementation() to create the alias for you anyway. Would this be desirable? Should I create a ticket for it? Jordan
