I basically did "....".pack("H*") which returns a ruby string. This string is an ASCII-8BIT encoded ruby string which is an alias for a Binary string (aka, it has no encoding). IMO, this should really be backed by an NSData class as opposed to an NSString class because it doesn't make much sense. In fact, it's pretty much impossible to get any useful information out of an ASCII-8BIT encoded ruby string from the objective-c side of things. To get around this, I did the following: class String def to_data return NSData.data unless length > 0 bytes = self.bytes.to_a p = Pointer.new_with_type("char *", bytes.length) bytes.each_with_index do |char, i| p[i] = char end NSData.dataWithBytes(p, length:bytes.length) end end I'm not sure what the solution to this is, but I thought I'd bring up the issue on the mailing list. ======= -- Ticket URL: <http://www.macruby.org/trac/ticket/732> MacRuby <http://macruby.org/>

On a related note, editing the BridgeSupport file for DictionaryServices also solved my problems when dealing with Boxed objects. The following code (by Craig): framework '/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Frameworks/DictionaryServices.framework' word = 'History' word_len = DCSGetTermRangeInString(nil, word, 0); res = DCSCopyTextDefinition(nil, word, word_len) puts "Definition for: #{word}" puts res would crash since DCSGetTermRangeInString wouldn't return a proper CFRange. Changing <function name='DCSGetTermRangeInString'> <arg type='^{__DCSDictionary=}'/> <arg type='^{__CFString=}'/> <arg type64='q' type='l'/> <retval type64='{?=qq}' type='{?=ii}'/> </function> to <function name='DCSGetTermRangeInString'> <arg type='^{__DCSDictionary=}'/> <arg type='^{__CFString=}'/> <arg type64='q' type='l'/> <retval type64='{_CFRange=qq}' type='{_CFRange=ii}'/> </function> in /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Frameworks/DictionaryServices.framework/Resources/BridgeSupport/DictionaryServices.bridgesupport did the trick. Seems like macruby-head doesn't have to deal with these issues though.

CFRange (Boxed) elements not accessible

Hello Laurent and team, The following code: string_range = CTLineGetStringRange(line) returns a CFRange, which is a C-structure with two elements: location and length. Attempting to access: string_range.location results in the error message: undefined method `location' for #<Boxed:0x200699fe0> (NoMethodError) (I think a similar error related to CLLocation has been discussed here before.)
