Hi, I see there's a `macgem` command, and I've noticed it picks up the same env as `gem`. Is it going to screw things up if I install from both into the same place, or should I give macgem its own special place? Regards, Iain

backtrace in cocoa callbacks ...

I guess the question is, do they (backtrace in cocoa/framework callbacks) ever work? Since everything in a cocoa is basically a callback, if they don't ... it makes things tough (for me, at least). I get the exceptions and I can catch/rescue them, but the backtraces seem always to be empty when I'm running in a Cocoa callback like -applicationDidFinishLaunching.

Noob question: Interface builder not picking up MacRuby definitions

Hi, Please forgive me if this is the wrong list for my questions. I'm just getting started with MacRuby, and running through several examples (like the one here http://www.macruby.org/documentation/tutorial.html) I've noticed that Interface Builder doesn't always pick up stuff defined by MacRuby classes, and some of the examples don't seem to work for me. In that tutorial I got to this line: >"You will then see that IB knows about your class, and especially the outlet and action defined earlier." Aside from the fact that the tutorial seems to have been written for an earlier version of Xcode, the Identity Inspector in Interface Builder does pick up the class but it doesn't pick up the actions or outlets. I try tying them up myself in the panel in the Library window but after build and run it still doesn't work properly. In the MacRuby book on O'Reilly's site http://macruby.labs.oreilly.com/ch04.html#_bindings I couldn't get it to even pick up the class in the Identity Inspector until I had it derive from an NS class. Coding the GUI directly with the AppKit framework does work, however (http://macruby.labs.oreilly.com/ch01.html#_code_example) so I know it *could* work. I'm on Xcode 3.2.3 and MacRuby 0.6 and OSX 10.6.4. I'm new to Xcode too, which I reinstalled to make sure it wasn't that. I gritted my teeth and did some Obj-C examples and they worked fine. I tried converting some Obj-C examples into MacRuby and they didn't work. Sometimes they'd build and run but events wouldn't work as expected, sometimes GDB would give the "app exited with error 1" error message. Is there something I've missed or need to install, or is it that MacRuby is still too new to work all the time? Any help much appreciated, as this project looks very, very helpful. Regards, Iain

Debugging API... standalone? documented? where?

Like some of you, I keep tabs on MacRuby and nu. I showed the nu guys this quote from the 0.6 release: "An interesting feature of the debugger is that it has been abstracted into a simple Objective-C API, of which macrubyd is just one client. Objective-C-style selectors and define_method

Hi, Can I define Objective-style interspersed-selector methods dynamically with define_method? I did this: class Foo # def foo(a, bar:b); puts a, b end define_method :"foo:bar" do |a, b| puts a, b end end Foo.new.foo(0, bar:1) and it seems to work. Is that it, or did I miss anything?

0.7 release status

Hi guys, A quick progress update on the upcoming 0.7 release. It's taking more time than initially planned, but we are on good tracks! 148 tickets have been closed. There are only 4 blocking tickets left in the tracker: #875: defect: super dispatches aren't cached (new) #858: defect: "rake spec:ci" crashes. (new) #806: defect: bundler does not work due to missing Gem::Specification::MatchPlatform (new) #795: defect: macirb: GCD inconsistently copies local variables inside blocks (new) Hopefully we will get these fixed soon. If you want to help feel free to comment in the tickets. A side note for ControlTower users: we intend to do the first release next week \o/ If you already use ControlTower and want something to be fixed, please file a ticket as soon as you can. Laurent

dylib hell

Ugh. The sqlite that ships with OS X doesn't have the full text search module enabled. This isn't usually a problem: just install a custom version, e.g., via macports, and then (re)install the sqlite3 gem. Works great for 1.8/1.9. Fails miserably for macruby. I think the problem is that while macruby doesn't link to any sqlite, CFNetwork does, and it links against the the system version. That link gets resolved before the gem extension is loaded, so the system version is used. I don't have much experience with dylibs on OS X, so I'm not sure if there's a good workaround for this. I can hack a workaround by actually calling out sqlite3 on the macruby link line and telling it to look at the maports version. That gets loaded before the framework stuff and everything seems happy. But, it's gross, of course. Ugh.

FYI - Update on NSView printing problem

I tracked down my NSView printing problem to the NSPrintPanel preview view. My view printing now works again by overriding the default option to display the small preview view: def print po = NSPrintOperation.printOperationWithView( @printableView ) po.printPanel.setOptions( 0 ) po.setShowsPrintPanel( true ) po.runOperationModalForWindow( @printableView.window, delegate:self, didRunSelector:"printOperationDidRun:success:contextInfo:", contextInfo:nil ) end def printOperationDidRun( printOperation, success:success, contextInfo:contextInfo ) puts "printOperationDidRun #{ success }" end or I can bypass the printPanel entirely. It will take more experimenting to find out why NSPrintPanel is not creating a graphics context for my NSView or why it would call my drawRect with an invalid context; it works with my PDFView. But now it's a low priority for me since I don't really need the NSPrintPanel preview. Bob Rice

I can't wait for macruby on iOS devices! If you are looking for something to hold you off until then, try out Wax, it's a Lua/Objective-C bridge that is similar to macruby http://github.com/probablycorey/wax. Corey
