macruby NSTask problem

Hi I tried the subprocess sample with the AsyncHandler from http://ofps.oreilly.com/titles/9781449380373/_foundation.html and found the following problem: if I execute the code many times (I tried 20 times) in my terminal with $ macruby sample.rb then 2-3 times it does not print any output. In this 10% the data_ready: method of the AsyncHandler is not called. Is this a macruby problem or an NSTask problem? BTW using NSFileHandleReadToEndOfFileCompletionNotification instead of NSFileHandleReadCompletionNotification makes it even worse, in this case data_ready: is never called. I use the 2011.09.27 macruby 0.11 snapshot and mac os x 10.6.8 Alex.

Overriding +autosavesInPlace

Hi all, I'm trying to add autosave and versions to an application and as far as I can tell from the docs it should be as simple as overriding +(BOOL)autosavesInPlace to return YES from my core data document application. So what I have is essentially: class MyDocument < NSPersistentDocument ... def autosavesInPlace return YES end end However, I don't get autosave or versions behavior (i.e. I've still got the "dirty dot", no versions menu in the title bar etc). Also, autosavesInPlace doesn't seem to get called. When I print a log message in there it never shows up in the console. Should this be working the way I'm doing it? Unfortunately, I don't have a Cocoa application to compare (yet) so I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong at the frameworks end or on the MacRuby side. One thing I was wondering (since I'm rather new to both Ruby and MacRuby): I'm overriding a class method here (+(BOOL), not -(BOOL)), is there anything special I need to consider when doing this from MacRuby? REXML UTF-8 Encoding not found

Hi Everyone, I am trying to deploy an app that uses XMLSimple and I am getting an error when I try to run the app on computers other than my own. Here is the error message: 11-10-02 9:14:17.289 PM [0x0-0x39039].com.blah.blah: /Users/me/Desktop/MyApp.app/Contents/Resources/rb_main.rb:18:in `block': no such file to load -- rexml/encodings/UTF-8.rb (LoadError) The only difference I can see is my development machine is running ruby 1.9.2 and the test environment is still at 1.8.6. Should the REXML be looking to the MacRuby framework? I am using XMLSimple as a file in my app not a gem. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Shaun

Problems with MacRuby 0.10 and rspec 2.6.4 under rvm

Hi all, I'm trying to use MacRuby with rspec, but it ain't working. I thought I read somewhere that it *should*. Is anyone else having problems, or is it an artifact of using rvm? Should I file a bug? GPL and the App Store

Hi all, I would like to build a MacRuby app to sell on the Mac App Store. However, I am concerned about the GPL license on some of the MacRuby source code, given what happened to VLC on the iOS App Store. I have googled around and the only discussion I could find on this topic was a brief page at Stack Exchange, which did not have a conclusive answer. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/7028270/license-of-macruby Reading LEGAL in the MacRuby distribution is confusing. It would seem that all the listed licenses apply if these files are all compiled into MacRuby. One of the files is GPL, therefore the whole app would have to be GPL, correct? I know that others are currently selling MacRuby apps in the Mac App Store, but I would like to know more about this issue before I spend time building my app in MacRuby. Rake exceptions always print a full trace

I wanted to verify that I'm not crazy and I'm not doing something stupid before I create a ticket for this. The `rake` that comes with MacRuby (both 0.10 and the nightly) seems to always print a full trace when a task raises an exception. So MacRuby seems to *always* print the full trace, regardless of whether I include the —trace flag. This is pretty annoying when running tests because of the constant visual noise when I get a failed test. Am I missing something? Is there any way to suppress the trace?

Odd crash message

Hi all, I'm building a MacRuby app on Lion, and then getting testers to run it on Snow Leopard, and I'm seeing the following symbol problem: dyld: Symbol not found: __dispatch_queue_attr_concurrent Referenced from MyApp.app/Contents/MacOS/../Frameworks/MacRuby.framework/Versions/Current/usr/lib/libmacruby.dylib Expected in: flat namespace I'm guessing this is a GCD thing. On my system, this seems to be provided by /usr/lib/libobjc.A.dylib, but is this not the case on SL installs? I'm using MacRuby HEAD, if that has any bearing on things, but if anyone has an idea as to the problem, I'd be very grateful! Nick

Substituting garbage collection with automatic reference counting

How fundamental is garbage collection in various aspects of MacRuby? a. Is garbage collection a hard requirement for MacRuby to be a ruby implementation, i.e. Does Ruby itself as a language / platform / runtime pose garbage collection as more or less a hard requirement? I wouldn't have thought so, but I'd like to hear the opinions of the more experienced. b. Are there parts of MacRuby, other than the area around object creation and lifecycle management, that depend on garbage collection in a major way, such that thinking of MacRuby and ARC on the same page would not make any practical sense? c. Could ARC be something that gc.c uses as an implementation feature, rather than the obj-c runtime GC in its current form, such that an ARC version of MacRuby could be created through relatively isolated changes in the memory management area? The background to this question is that I had observed a fair amount of keenness in the iOS development community to program with Ruby. I even remember seeing a trigger-happy blog article about MacRuby for iOS a few months back when most likely the ARC feature was mistaken for garbage collection. I'm uncertain how larger-than-reality my observation was, but I for one would be much happier if I could write iOS apps using MacRuby.
