I am trying to make a Document based MacRuby application. I create the new project in Xcode4 (4.0.2) and immediately select build and run. The application starts but there is no "Untitled" window and the File->New and File->Open menu options are greyed out. Following the same sequence of actions except choosing an Objective-C based application, the "Untitled" Window appears and the menu options are active. I have compared the project contents, the xib files (including File Owners and First Responders) and linked frameworks and can find no difference that would explain the different operation. It would seem that there is some problem with NSDocumentController in the MacRuby version. It is either not there or has been added properly to the responder chain. Am I missing something? Or is this a defect? Has anyone else encountered this and found a work around? Andy Stechishin

Concurrency bug in ControlTower

Apologies reporting this here; I'm not sure where I should report bugs in ControlTower. I believe there's a bug in ControlTower around line 34: def open @status = :open while (@status == :open) connection = @socket.accept # << here @request_queue.async(@request_group) do The "connection" local variable is used in the async block below to parse the request and send the response. Unless MacRuby's blocks behave differently than regular Ruby, this variable is shared across all activations of that block. As a result, it's possible that two concurrent requests will end up using each others' connection, and usually just blowing up as a result. The fix I've come up with is to wrap the @request_queue.async call in a tap call: def open @status = :open while (@status == :open) conn = @socket.accept conn.tap do |connection| @request_queue.async(@request_group) do Since async can't accept any explicitly-passed state, this seems like the safest way to ensure the connection reference is not shared by separate invocations. I'm not sure if it's possible in GCD, but having async take an optional argument with explicitly-passed state might also be a good way to fix this. - Charlie

macruby_deploy and nokogiri - LoadError on some mac

Hi I tried to use macruby_deploy to embed my macruby based mac app with gems (/usr/local/bin/macruby_deploy --compile --embed --gem nokogiri) The resulting app run fine on my machine. However, on many of our testers, the app failed with "LoadError". It seems nokogiri depends on a libiconv with different version. (nokogiri.bundle requires version 8.0.0 or later, but libiconv.2.dylib provides version 7.0.0) We cant ask our user to install each of those library. Are there any way I can build the app embed the correct version of libiconv? macruby does not compile for me on Lion with xcode 4.1

Hi, I have some trouble compiling MacRuby on Lion with XCode 4.1. As some tickets in the trac indicate that people are using macruby on lion, i think this might be a problem with my setup. As said, its a MacOSX Lion with xcode 4.1 build 4B110 (got it from the appstore just yesterday). I checked out 0.10 from github.com and rake'd it: In file included from kernel.c:19: encoding.h:22:30: error: unicode/ustring.h: No such file or directory This seems reasonable since unicode/*.h is in icu-1060/. Shouldnt these header files come with xcode anyway? After my silly approach of copying the files into the include folder, the compiler does find the needed deklarations and the rake process goes on. However, some files later: /usr/bin/gcc-4.2 -std=c99 -I. -I./include -pipe -fno-common -fexceptions -fblocks -g -O3 -Wall -Wno-deprecated-declarations -Werror -arch x86_64 -c gc.c -o .objs/gc.o gc.c: In function ‘ruby_xmalloc_ptrs’: gc.c:130: error: ‘AUTO_MEMORY_ALL_POINTERS’ undeclared (first use in this function) gc.c:130: error: (Each undeclared identifier is reported only once gc.c:130: error: for each function it appears in.) rake aborted! I just joined the list and was in digest mode.. i hope this will reply to the already begun thread by just including the same subject line.. if not, my apologies for beginning a duplicate thread.. thanks for the advice.. that article looks familiar.. i think I saw it before.. it may have planted a seed of doubt ! some good news.. I just saw that the Elysium MIDI sequencer app on GitHub uses Objective-C with garbage collection, and it seems to work.. I was thinking that perhaps there may be a way to run some threads separately "outside" of the garbage collection, so that if there is ever a mark-and-sweep process going on, it would ignore the non-gc threads that may be playing MIDI.. but it seems that registering any POSIX threads with the GC with "objc_registerThreadWithCollector()" suggests otherwise (that there is no way to use any non-GC threads in GC application). If the app is being built with GC supported but not required, then it still allows conventional allocation/retain/release methods of manual memory management in some places.. this seems that there would be some way to specify that certain threads are to not be affected by any GC operations.. I hope that is the case... in any event, those threads obviously couldn't use any MacRuby code.. so I guess this has fallen off-topic ! If anyone has any further info on this, it would be very helpful.. Thanks ! I have already had success with evaluating MacRuby files from the AppDelegate and they work great in tandem with the rest of the code in Objective-C. I'm just concerned about getting further along with application, and all of a sudden finding out that there are MIDI timing issues that are being adversely affected by the garbage collection. Right now the MIDI output that the app is generating sounds tight, although the app is simple at this point, and I'm worried that as more objects get allocated, etc.. there may be some timing issues. If that does happen, will there be a way to fix that using NSThreads? Or would I need to use pthreads and register them with "objc_registerThreadWithCollector()" ? Xcode 4.1 and MacRuby IBOutlets broken

Hi Everyone, I am having issues with the MacRuby IBOutlets not functioning in Lion and Xcode 4.1. I have reinstalled both multiple times and I had it working for a week or so but just today it stopped working. I reinstalled the nightly build again and that hasn't fixed it. I know there was some discussion about this issue when Lion was still pre-release. Anyone have some insight to share? Thanks, Shaun

Xcode4 - Unit Tests / "Run Script" output

Hi all, How are you running your Unit Test in xcode4? Following the guide here: http://www.macruby.org/recipes/tdd-in-objective-c-with-macruby.html It went okay, Scripts output to the build log and in contrast octests output to the console. The problem I see with this method of running specs/tests is that "Run Script" happens outside of the octest run. And octest is always "blank" because no tests are coded for it. So has anyone bridged between this? Maybe running macruby inside the octest run? I'm not sure. Any tips? Any projects I should look at? Regards, - Rob

macruby_deploy problem with app having space in name

Hey guys, I have an app with a space in the name. macruby_deploy fails to do its job: $ macruby_deploy --compile --embed --bs Gmail\ Notifr.app *** Deployment started *** Embedding MacRuby.framework *** Embed BridgeSupport system files *** Fix install path of binaries *** Fix identification name of libmacruby /usr/bin/otool: can't open file: Gmail (No such file or directory) /usr/bin/otool: can't open file: Notifr.app/Contents/Frameworks/MacRuby.framework/Versions/Current/usr/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.9.2/universal-darwin10.0/bigdecimal.bundle (No such file or directory) Error when executing `/usr/bin/otool -L Gmail Notifr.app/Contents/Frameworks/MacRuby.framework/Versions/Current/usr/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.9.2/universal-darwin10.0/bigdecimal.bundle' Quoting the app name doesn't help. (I could change the app name and the executable name in the package content, use macruby_deploy on it then change back the name) (On another machine I have nightly build of April installed, and that macruby_deploy actually worked).
