I am trying to make a Document based MacRuby application. I create the new project in Xcode4 (4.0.2) and immediately select build and run. The application starts but there is no "Untitled" window and the File->New and File->Open menu options are greyed out. Following the same sequence of actions except choosing an Objective-C based application, the "Untitled" Window appears and the menu options are active. I have compared the project contents, the xib files (including File Owners and First Responders) and linked frameworks and can find no difference that would explain the different operation. It would seem that there is some problem with NSDocumentController in the MacRuby version. It is either not there or has been added properly to the responder chain. Am I missing something? Or is this a defect? Has anyone else encountered this and found a work around? Andy Stechishin

Concurrency bug in ControlTower

Apologies reporting this here; I'm not sure where I should report bugs in ControlTower. I believe there's a bug in ControlTower around line 34: def open @status = :open while (@status == :open) connection = @socket.accept # << here @request_queue.async(@request_group) do The "connection" local variable is used in the async block below to parse the request and send the response. Unless MacRuby's blocks behave differently than regular Ruby, this variable is shared across all activations of that block. As a result, it's possible that two concurrent requests will end up using each others' connection, and usually just blowing up as a result. The fix I've come up with is to wrap the @request_queue.async call in a tap call: def open @status = :open while (@status == :open) conn = @socket.accept conn.tap do |connection| @request_queue.async(@request_group) do Since async can't accept any explicitly-passed state, this seems like the safest way to ensure the connection reference is not shared by separate invocations. I'm not sure if it's possible in GCD, but having async take an optional argument with explicitly-passed state might also be a good way to fix this. - Charlie

macruby_deploy and nokogiri - LoadError on some mac

Hi I tried to use macruby_deploy to embed my macruby based mac app with gems (/usr/local/bin/macruby_deploy --compile --embed --gem nokogiri) The resulting app run fine on my machine. However, on many of our testers, the app failed with "LoadError". It seems nokogiri depends on a libiconv with different version. (nokogiri.bundle requires version 8.0.0 or later, but libiconv.2.dylib provides version 7.0.0) We cant ask our user to install each of those library. Are there any way I can build the app embed the correct version of libiconv? Invoking an obj-c method requiring a block

I tried using blocks today, to no avail. This didn't work: NSNotificationCenter.defaultCenter.addObserverForName "kDocSetSelection Changed", object:nil, queue:nil, usingBlock:Proc.new{ |notification| NSLog("notified") } But this did: NSNotificationCenter.defaultCenter.addObserver(self, selector: "handleM e:", name: "kDocSetSelectionChanged", object: nil) I found http://www.macruby.org/trac/ticket/760 that hinted MacRuby does impleme nt blocks, but also had references to BridgeSupport. I installed the preview-3 version; what would be the reason the above didn't work? Thanks.

Serialport IO and OS X Lion

Hi devotees, I was using an Obj-C wrapper for serial port IO written by Paolo Bosetti but I found that it no longer works in Lion. Does anyone know what might have changed? Does MacRuby have a better solution for serial IO yet than using an Obj-C wrapper? Thanks, Bob Rice

AWS-S3 gem doesn't work with MacRuby

This works when I try it in MRI. But this is what happens in Macruby. Experiences with m17N using PostgreSQL with macruby

I want to use PostgreSQL with macruby. At first I couldn't make this work. I eventually had some success and learned quite a lot on the way. I'm not sure whether I found a bug in macruby but it certainly behaves differently from ruby 1.9.2-p290 installed from macports. The latter worked with postgres with no problems. My first try was with macruby 0.10 stable. I couldn't get the pg gem (pg-0.11.0) to compile and eventually gave up. There were lots of obscure errors which I regret I've not recorded. I then moved onto macruby 0.11 which I compiled from source that I checked out today. pg-0.11.0 now compiled but when I tried to use postgres from my macruby test I aborted with a failed dynamic link to ENCODING_GET_INLINED. I soon realised this was another name for ENCODING_GET and I added the definition to macruby's encoding.h. I could now get as far as connecting to postgres and retrieving a result set. However, as son as I tried to examine any of the values in the result set I aborted: Assertion failed: (idx >= 0 && idx < ENCODINGS_COUNT), function rb_enc_associate_index, file encoding.c, line 590. Abort trap: 6 I eventually found that pg was passing an idx of -1. I modified the the pg code to prevent this happening and it now works fine, as far as I've gone. It seems to me that pg should not pass an index of -1. ruby 1.9.2-p290 however seems to accept it. So who's right ? Hope this is of interest to someone. Steve

Seeing errors in macrake

Is there a reason that macrake always exits so quietly on an error? macrake -v doesn't seem to have any effect on this, or has showed me meaningless info. At this point I have to load objects into macirb to see where the error is occurring.

How do I install bundler without disrupting my MRI bundler

If I try to install bundler using "sudo macgem install bundler", it wants to over-write my existing bundler that is located at usr/bin/bundle. This is obviously a problem because it breaks bundler for all of my MRI projects. So I installed rvm, thinking that it would keep the gems separate from each other, but when I switch to macruby with rvm, "gem install bundler" doesn't install it with the macgems, and so bundler isn't accessible by macrake. Any ideas?

unrecognized command line option "-fblocks"

Hi all, I'm trying to install MacRuby on my mac running OS X 10.5.8 (Leopard).
