I am trying to make a Document based MacRuby application. I create the new project in Xcode4 (4.0.2) and immediately select build and run. The application starts but there is no "Untitled" window and the File->New and File->Open menu options are greyed out. Following the same sequence of actions except choosing an Objective-C based application, the "Untitled" Window appears and the menu options are active. I have compared the project contents, the xib files (including File Owners and First Responders) and linked frameworks and can find no difference that would explain the different operation. It would seem that there is some problem with NSDocumentController in the MacRuby version. It is either not there or has been added properly to the responder chain. Am I missing something? Or is this a defect? Has anyone else encountered this and found a work around? Andy Stechishin

Concurrency bug in ControlTower

Apologies reporting this here; I'm not sure where I should report bugs in ControlTower. I believe there's a bug in ControlTower around line 34: def open @status = :open while (@status == :open) connection = @socket.accept # << here @request_queue.async(@request_group) do The "connection" local variable is used in the async block below to parse the request and send the response. Unless MacRuby's blocks behave differently than regular Ruby, this variable is shared across all activations of that block. As a result, it's possible that two concurrent requests will end up using each others' connection, and usually just blowing up as a result. The fix I've come up with is to wrap the @request_queue.async call in a tap call: def open @status = :open while (@status == :open) conn = @socket.accept conn.tap do |connection| @request_queue.async(@request_group) do Since async can't accept any explicitly-passed state, this seems like the safest way to ensure the connection reference is not shared by separate invocations. I'm not sure if it's possible in GCD, but having async take an optional argument with explicitly-passed state might also be a good way to fix this. - Charlie

macruby_deploy and nokogiri - LoadError on some mac

Hi I tried to use macruby_deploy to embed my macruby based mac app with gems (/usr/local/bin/macruby_deploy --compile --embed --gem nokogiri) The resulting app run fine on my machine. However, on many of our testers, the app failed with "LoadError". It seems nokogiri depends on a libiconv with different version. (nokogiri.bundle requires version 8.0.0 or later, but libiconv.2.dylib provides version 7.0.0) We cant ask our user to install each of those library. Are there any way I can build the app embed the correct version of libiconv? MacRuby and Scripting Bridge

Hi all, As i am migrating from RubyCocoa (and the rb-appscript gem) to MacRuby I am charmed by Scripting Bridge: no gems required and supposedly easy to use. Now my problem is how to migrate some statements: take this one in RubyCocoa and appscript: * app("Adobe Indesign CS5").script_preferences.user_interaction_level.set(:never_interact)* to Scripting Bridge? *appurl = NSURL.fileURLWithPath("/Applications/Adobe Indesign CS5/Adobe InDesign CS5.app") app = SBApplication.applicationWithURL(appurl)* app.dosamething It wont accept app.scripting_preferences or app.scriptpreferences? Alas, app.methods does not reveal a lot of information apart from the default ruby methods. Any clues (blogs, ...) where i can find info are more than welcome! Thanks in advance -- Nimitz

[ANN] AXElements: UI Automation with MacRuby

Hey all, On behalf of Marketcircle Inc., I am open sourcing a library that I have been working on for a while now. AXElements is an alternative to using Auotmator or the ScriptingBridge frameworks. AXElements provides more generic actions than it's alternatives and should work with almost any Cocoa app without needing to be explicitly supported; you can think of it as Capybara for desktop apps. It is meant to be used for automated testing of GUI apps, but can be used for general UI automation. You can combine it with testing libraries like minitest, Rspec, or macbacon; but there is nothing stopping you from combining AXElements with James to voice command some workflows. The source is available on github and I have put together some small tutorails in the documentation. I've also made a beta release to rubygems, and will make a proper release soon. To get it now: macgem install AXElements --pre And then require 'ax_elements' to get started in macirb or a script. Invoking an obj-c method requiring a block

I tried using blocks today, to no avail. This didn't work: NSNotificationCenter.defaultCenter.addObserverForName "kDocSetSelection Changed", object:nil, queue:nil, usingBlock:Proc.new{ |notification| NSLog("notified") } But this did: NSNotificationCenter.defaultCenter.addObserver(self, selector: "handleM e:", name: "kDocSetSelectionChanged", object: nil) I found http://www.macruby.org/trac/ticket/760 that hinted MacRuby does impleme nt blocks, but also had references to BridgeSupport. I installed the preview-3 version; what would be the reason the above didn't work? Thanks.

Have you got the right signature? programatic binding (undefined bind method on NSTextField)

I want to bind my NSTextField to my model object. In objective-c I would do something like [mytextfield bind:@"value" toObject:myperson withKeyPath:@"address" options:nil]; But I have problems doing this in MacRuby with the following snippet: mytextfield = NSTextField.alloc.initWithFrame [20, 200, 200, 20] mytextfield.bind('value', toObject:'myperson', withKeyPath:'address') It says that NSTextField does not have a bind method. Do I misunderstand something, or is the bind method really missing and I have to set/remove the observers all myself? Thanks, ALex.

Unexpected results when using strings with encoding functions

Hi, I've just spent a long time being puzzled by the following behavior. I have a String (I thought). When I tried to use my_string.encode(..) I got a NoMethodError exception. I only finally realised what was happening when I subsequently did my_string.force_encoding(...). In this case I get a helpful exception telling me that force_encoding is not supported for NSStrings. It would be very helpful if encode failed in the same way - or even created a ruby String under the covers? Steve
