MacRuby gems running very slow, how to debug/improve

Hi all, I use a bunch of Ruby Script and appscript-rb, together with a stand-alone keyboard shortcut app to integrate a number of Mac apps. ( http://reganmian.net/wiki/researchr:start) I am very interested in the possibility of porting this to MacRuby, because currently my biggest problem is the difficult other users have in installing this workflow (requiring XCode, binary gems, other applications etc). However, the two gems that I am absolutely dependent on are bibtex-ruby and citeproc-ruby. These both run extremely slowly on MacRuby. As a very simple example, here are the differences in running a script that only includes the lines include 'rubygems' include 'bibtex' (or 'citeproc') Ruby MRI 1.92p80: 0.18 and 0.36 MacRuby 0.12: 2.88 and .677 Running the parsing benchmarks for BibTeX in MacRuby is also 20-100 times slower. This makes it unusable for my purposes. I wonder how I can address this. The developer asked me for ruby-prof output, but I know that doesn't currently run on MacRuby. I have XCode and Instruments, but having never used XCode for ObjC development, I have no idea about how to configure Instruments to make it useful for his purposes. Getting addresses for function arguments in GDB

I have had a few occasions where I wanted to understand more about certain signals my MacRuby program was receiving. While digging for more information, I came across a post on the maling list that suggested I could get all the addresses for crucial MR function calls such as rv_vm_dispatch, such as the following snippet at http://lists.macosforge.org/pipermail/macruby-devel/2010-July/005524.html : #27 0x000000010013083b in rb_vm_dispatch (_vm=0x10704a3d0, cache=0x107712510, top=8593309248, self=8593309248, klass=0x20034b8c0, sel=0x7fff84e14103, block=0x0, opt=2 '\002', argc=<value temporarily unavailable, due to optimizations>, argv=0x101780a88) at dispatcher.cpp:163 I tried to get the same information in my gdb backtrace, without success. I set DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH to . as described in README.rdoc, then on Joshua's suggestion at freenode #macruby, also tried building macruby head without optimisation by passing 'optz_level=0' to rake. I still have no parameters showing up on my backtrace. Any idea how I can make the backtraces show up? Also, while rummaging through the mailing list, I came across some past plans to implement dwarf symbolication. Is that still the planned course of development? Can anyone help me out with understanding its current status so I can see what there is for me to chip in? Regards, Andy Park

Nightly Build Package is not latest.

Xcode: rb_nibtool no longer picking up actions

I've been following the discussions about getting Xcode 4.3 to find rb_nibtool. The symlink works for me. However it seems to deal OK with outlets but is not working at all for received actions - even in the simplest cases. What may be interesting is that even before I installed 4.3 it stopped recognising actions in 4.2. As far as I'm aware I changed nothing in my setup at this time, so I wonder if it's an Apple Software update that has caused the problem? At present I'm stuck and can't get actions to work in 4.2 or 4.3 even though rb_nibtool is being invoked in both cases. I know because it successfully recognises any change to outlets. I'm using the nightly build from last night (dated 24th Feb). Steve

MacRuby Working Properly?

I'm not sure if this is the appropriate forum to post this, so please accept my apologies if so. I have a slight suspicion that MacRuby is not working/not installed properly in my machine. In macirb, the class of an object is always reported as the Ruby class, not the NS class - e.g., string is always "String", when I believe it should be NSString. $ macirb irb(main):001:0> "foo".class => String also $ ruby -ve "p ''.methods.size" ruby 1.9.3p0 (2011-10-30 revision 33570) [x86_64-darwin11.2.0] 162 $ macruby -ve "p ''.methods.size" MacRuby 0.10 (ruby 1.9.2) [universal-darwin10.0, x86_64] 162 when I would have expected the numbers to be higher in the second. Is this something that I should be concerned about? The curious thing is that I am working my way through Matt's book, and the examples seem to work properly (including in Xcode, apart from the hiccup with the recent 4.3 upgrade, which I haven't been able to resolve yet). Any help would be gratefully received. Thanks in advance. System is 10.7.3, Ruby 1.9.3, MacRuby 0.10, Xcode 4.3. Regards, Chong-Yee

Compiling with debug information

I might be missing something obvious here. I want to be able to build MacRuby with debug information by tweaking the command-line instead of the code itself (which is what I had been doing until now). If there's an easier way, please let me know what it is and if there's not, should I send a pull request that wraps all the #defines in #ifndefs? Marc

'rake spec:ci' causing crash (built from HEAD)

Hi, I've only recently started compiling the HEAD version, mainly to see if I can get more informative crashes when I e.g. misuse functions with variadic arguments, such as NSLog. README.rdoc suggested I could run rake spec:ci - I guess it's from Rubinius? - to get some sort of progress on completeness of compatibility, so I did so, then got some crashes. After a few compile runs over a few days, I've decided my MacBook isn't up to compiling too often. I noticed the nightly builds are uploaded, and was wondering if the builds get the 'rake spec:ci' run as well, and if so, whether that output could also be added to the nightly script's jobs. I'd be glad to help out in any way if there needs to be changes made.

Xcode 4.3 move template files

Hi, I post a question on Twitter : https://twitter.com/#!/MacRuby/status/170616426959351808 So, I've installed MacRuby 0.10 downloaded from the MacRuby website. And before, I've proceeded to the update of Xcode to 4.3. Whenever, I want to create a new Xcode project, I don't see MacRuby project, like on image from twitter message (https://twitter.com/#!/GRoguelon/status/170451071108521984/photo/1/large) So, I've searched and the template files had moved to /Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/Developer/Library/Xcode/Templates I've copied the original files which are located to /Developer/ to /Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/Developer/Library/Xcode/Templates respecting the tree and Xcode 4.3 purpose me again the MacRuby project. Anyway, when you do the update of Xcode, at the first use, Xcode ask to remove the old version and there are only the MacRuby files in /Developer. At my first attempt, when I've opened the storyboard, Xcode've crashed so I don't know if it's because of MacRuby but I can't succeed to reproduce the crash.
