$stderr in MacRuby

I've added a logging window to an application, and I would like to display any errors in there too. So far I have done this: class NonStderr def write( error_string ) $log_view.insertText(error_string) end end Then, in applicationDidFinishLaunching(aNotif) I put this: $stderr = NonStderr.new $stderr.write "test test test" # appears in my log window cause_an_exception() # does not appear in the log window I saw an old ticket about MacRuby not writing errors to stderr, http://lists.macosforge.org/pipermail/macruby-tickets/2012-February/002686.… , but this is on the old system so I'm not sure. Does anyone know how to do this in MacRuby? Thanks. -- Stephen Horne

LLVM 3.1 Support

I have started a fork on at https://github.com/ashgti/MacRuby that compiles and runs with llvm 3.1 and clang support. Everything is currently building and running, but its failing some of the spec tests. I just wanted to post this here in case anyone was interested in trying it out or helping with any of the failing specs. The major differences are the introduction of the ArrayRef<> from the llvm (it wraps std::vector and C style arrays), the new exception handling system, clang support and removing const from a few data types because the llvm api's changed. I still need to clean up the commit a bit, but feel free to try it out and let me know if anyone has any issues. -- John Harrison

MacRuby questions

Hello all, I'm an experienced Mac developer trying to add Ruby to my toolbox. Most of my previous experience is with Python, Tcl, Objective-C, and AppleScript, and I'd like to add Ruby as well. My interest in MacRuby stems in large part because it appears to have vastly superior app deployment tools than are found in standard Ruby, which are non-existent. I had a few questions about MacRuby and its differences from standard C-Ruby: 1. Is MacRuby mature enough to function as a drop-in replacement for standard Ruby? Are there significant gaps in functionality? Specifically, does ffi work? (I tried to run a "hello world" ruby-tk app using the ffi and ffi-tk gems, but MacRuby just segfaulted with an error code of 11.) 2. Is it possible to have a command-line toolchain/workflow for development and deployment of MacRuby apps, or is heavy use of Xcode required? Here's a bit more about my specific use case for MacRuby: I develop desktop apps using scripting languages; most of my experience to date has been with Tcl/Tk and Python/Tk, dropping down into Objective-C or C where necessary for speed or integration with specific API's, using just a basic text editor-Terminal workflow. (I'm one the maintainers of Tk on the Mac.) My apps integrate heavily into Cocoa or Carbon API's when necessary to implement stuff like NSServices, AppleScript support, etc. Both Tcl and Python have excellent support for deployment of desktop apps (Tcl has an entire standalone app environment, while Python has py2app and related tools). Standard Ruby has no such tools on the Mac whatsoever. I like the fact that MacRuby would make AppleScript support for my app easy, and the macruby_deploy tool seems to be what's missing from standard Ruby--gathering all bits and libs into an app bundle, running install_name_tool where necessary, etc. The segfault with ffi-tk, however, has me concerned (this particular lib has been advertised to work with any and all Ruby implementations including JRuby). Adding ruby 1.8.7 scripts to an application bundle during build

I have a collection of scripts that I want to call from my application. These are 1.8.7 ruby scripts, and cannot be converted to MacRuby. Currently, I have them installed in a separate directory, and I just call them from the application. I would like to place them within the bundle to keep everything together, and prevent breaking the external ones through future changes, but I can't figure out how to copy them in during the build phase without trying to compile them to MacRuby, which fails. I've been trying to do it by adding the directory to the 'Copy Bundle Resources' phase of the project's Build Phases in Targets. Does anyone know a way to do this? Thanks, -- Stephen Horne

Installing MacRuby 0.12 with Xcode 4.3.3

Hi, I have problems installing MacRuby on my iMac. On an empty disk, I proceed as follow, in order: Install OS: 10.7.4 (11E53) Install Xcode 4.3.3 for Lion which ask for installing "Mobile Divice Framework", I do it, restart Xcode, quit it. Looking for files containing "macruby", I find a lot in "/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/" and "/Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/Developer/Platforms/MacOSX.platform/Developer/SDKs/MacOSX10.7.sdk/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/" folders (seems normal as all are in private frameworks) Launch Xcode, asking for a new Mac application: as expected, no MacRuby template is proposed. I cancel. Asking Xcode>Preferences>Download, I download "Command Line Tool" Ask for Xcode location to install support: claude-chertons-imac:~ claudecherton$ xcode-select -print-path => /Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/Developer Installing MacRuby 0.12 Launching Xcode, create a new application MacRuby template is there, I choose it No MacRuby.framework is found: it appears in red in Application Target>Linked Frameworks and Libraries Looking for files containing "macruby" I find "MacRuby.framework" in "/Library/Frameworks" I can delete the missing framework reference an make File>Add file to add the MacRuby.framework from the location found above Trying to execute a small test, I get the message 'MacRuby/MacRuby.h' file not found for the line #import <MacRuby/MacRuby.h> Looking at Xcode/contents structure discourage me to try further to fix problems. However, I would be happy to run MacRuby on Xcode 4 (all attempts I did before with Xcode 4.1 and 4.2, MacRuby 0.10 and 0.12 were without success despite the time I spend on internet to find a solution. xcode crashed on run button pressed

Hi, I installed macruby 0.11 and created a simple macruby application with xcode 4.3.2 without changing anything. When I pressed the run button, xcode just crashed. Then I switched to macruby nightly build, the same thing happened again. Finally, I built macruby from source code following the instructions in macruby project's readme file but the same problem still existed. Did someone encountered the same problem?

gem not loading in MacRuby app

This is a followup to my problems migrating to Xcode 4.3.3 and MacRuby 0.12 under Lion 10.7.4. Situation as of yesterday: - MacRuby 0.12 installer installed in /Library/Frameworks instead of within Xcode 4.3.3 bundle - MacRuby project template links MacRuby frameworks from within Xcode 4.3.3 bundle where it's missing - Worked around by copying the MacRuby framework back to within Xcode 4.3.3 bundle using the ditto command. New problem: My MacRuby app fails to load its gems, which it claims are not found. So it seems the workaround is not so good. Perhaps the gems are looked for relative to the framework location? So I reversed the workaround and patched the MacRuby project instead: - I removed MacRuby.framework referring to the /Developer location (which happens to be within Xcode) - I added MacRuby.framework from /Library/Frameworks - I added "/Library/Frameworks" to the target settings "Framework Search Paths" And now my app can find its gems. I am still uncomfortable with my installation problem. Where is the MacRuby installer supposed to install the framework anyway? Why didn't it? Or is the Xcode project template that is wrong? At least I can go on working. Of course, next is another issue, apparently unrelated, so I'll write it up in another post. macgem 'undefined method' error

Hi, When executing: macgem install sequel I get: Fetching: sequel-3.36.1.gem ( 4%)ERROR: While executing gem … (NoMethodError) undefined method `to_str' for #<Errno::EAGAIN:0x4026968a0> I have no idea whether the issue is with MacRuby or sequel.
